A subtle emotional journey impeccably orchestrated by director Mike Nichols and acutely well acted, Regarding Henry has a back-to-basics message that’s bound to strike a responsive chord in the troubled aftermath of the 1980s.

week, I sat with one tear welling in the corner of my left eye and a

Henry Turner (Harrison Ford) ist ein erfolgreicher Anwalt mit einer Frau und einer Tochter. Er verbringt nicht viel Zeit mit seiner Familie, sondern konzentriert sich eher auf seine Arbeit und er ist in seiner Kanzlei bei seinen Kollegen sehr beliebt. Eines Tages er von einem Ladendieb angeschossen wird, fällt er ins Koma. Als er aus dem Koma erwacht, hat er alle seine Fähigkeiten verloren und auch sein Gedächtnis. Henry muss alles wieder neu erlernen und benimmt sich wie ein Kind.
Harris Ford spiel hier seine Rolle wie eigentlich immer super. Am Anfang spielt er einen unsympathischen Anwalt. Ab dem Moment wo er sein Gedächtnis verliert und sich wie ein Kind benimmt, spielt er sehr überzeugend. Generell muss man sagen, dass der Cast perfekt ist und die Beziehung zwischen Henry und seiner Familie ebenfalls gut dargestellt wurde. Wer einen dramatischen Film erwartet, könnte sehr enttäuscht werden. Der Film bringt viel Humor mit sich und ist nicht so stark auf Emotionen fokussiert. Es gibt auch emotionale Momente, welche gut funktionieren. An einigen Stellen zieht sich der Film und der Charakter Bradley hat mir am Anfang nicht gefallen, aber es hat sich gebessert. Die Beziehung zwischen Henry und seiner Tochter hat mir am besten gefallen, da sie so authentisch gewirkt hat. Der Film hat viele Elemente, die es auch in anderen Filmen gibt, es ist nicht besonders neues dabei, trotzdem überzeugt der Film mit tollen Charakteren. Die anderen Anwälte sind nicht näher beleuchtend und sind eher nur Geldgierig.

A unique self discovery story or heroes journey. It is about the lawyer Henry Turner who is obsessed with his work, uses every dirty trick in the book to win trials and his job leaves no time for his family. However his life changes when he goes to a convenience store and interrupts a robbery. He is shot in the head and the bullet hits his frontal lobe (brain). While he survives he has amnesia and has to relearn even the basics like talking, eating and moving. In short he has to rediscover who he was before. I end it here to avoid spoilers. I like the story as it is like I said earlier a self discovery or rediscovery. A chance to see himself without excuses or maybe even a second chance. This made the movie interesting for me. Others claimed they use too much cliches or tropes and I wont deny this. However these tell a compelling story and have a great moral lesson. A bit of a modern fairy tale I guess. The actors help to deliver the story and Harrison Ford as Henry Turner is extremely good. He plays his role so well that I sometimes forgot that it was just a movie. Annette Bening as his wife Sarah Turner and Mikki Allen as their daughter Rachel Turner deliver their roles and give the family perspective. I don't remember the other actors except Henrys caregiver and colleagues from the law firm who all did a praiseworthy performance. I should praise also director Mike Nichols and writer J. J. Abrams (Yes that one). The score from the legend Hans Zimmer enhances the atmosphere. Overall this was a nice movie with an idea I liked and that gave me a lot to think. It might not be an all time classic or box office hit but not everything needs to be one. An 8/10 seems fair for me.

Nichols is so astute at directing the actors (who also include Bill Nunn, Donald Moffat, and Nancy Marchand) that it's relatively easy to overlook the yuppie complacency, shameless devices (starting with an adorable puppy), and product plugs (especially Ritz crackers) that undermine the seriousness of the whole project.
Maudlin, schematic and surely scientifically unsound, Regarding Henry is a by-the-book tearjerker that has only one thing going for it: Ford's performance. But that's not enough to make up for Jeffrey Abrams' colorless script and Mike Nichols' uninspired direction. [10 July 1991, p.E7]
The movie has a few jokes, but it could have used some of the canny, real-world logic that made Rain Man so convincing (and funny).
There's much amiss here, with a long catalog of contrived situations that make this film a tough act to swallow.
It is one of the conventions of movies that maladies of the brain make people more childlike, lovable and full of life, as in, most recently, "Rain Man" and "Awakenings." But Regarding Henry drops even the marginally realistic trappings of those films in favor of pure fantasy, a fantasy of starting over, of returning to the womb. [10 July 1991, p.C-1]
