With remarkable stealth and concentration, Diop rewires the generic circuitry of the courtroom drama, avoiding its natural inclination toward sensationalism and grandstanding. She also preserves, through a seamless meld of fiction and nonfiction, the contours and complexities of a terrible true story.
Above all Saint Omer is a singularly moving courtroom drama.

Não entendo esse fascínio por referências, como se o apego a uma obra clássica, apego pelo apego, fará do filme, de imediato, tão bom quanto. No caso, "Saint Omer" flerta com o mito grego de Medeia, ao contar a história de uma escritora que vai acompanhar o julgamento de uma mãe que matou o filho.
O mito de Medeia conta a história de uma mulher que se apaixona por Jasão, líder dos Argonautas, que chega à cidade de Colchis em busca do lendário Velo de Ouro. Medeia, uma feiticeira poderosa e filha do rei de Colchis, ajuda Jasão a conquistar o Velo, utilizando seus poderes mágicos para ajudá-lo a superar os desafios impostos pelo rei.
No entanto, após Jasão e Medeia fugirem juntos, Medeia enfrenta uma série de tragédias. Ela mata seu próprio irmão, Absirto, para atrasar os perseguidores enviados por seu pai, e então ela e Jasão se refugiam em Corinto, onde têm dois filhos. Entretanto, Jasão decide abandonar Medeia para se casar com Glauce, filha do rei de Corinto, buscando uma aliança política mais vantajosa.
A traição de Jasão deixa Medeia consumida pela raiva e pelo desejo de vingança. Ela utiliza sua inteligência e poderes mágicos para elaborar um plano de vingança terrível: ela presenteia Glauce com um vestido enfeitiçado que a queima até a morte e, em seguida, mata seus próprios filhos para causar a Jasão o máximo de dor possível.
Bem, feita essa introdução, gosto de como o filme dá muito valor às falas, e se torna um filme de tribunal, o que muito me agrada. No entanto, as opções estéticas da Alice Diop em fazer um filme onde 90% de seu substrato é no tribunal, torna a experiência cansativa demais. E para piorar, as cenas fora dali são bem ruins.
Então, o filme se aproveita da boa entrega das atrizes (sensacional, o que há de melhor no filme) e com isso vai narrando sua história. O problema é que é basicamente um podcast, salvo as expressões das atrizes que acabam por salvar o filme da mediocridade, e o poder da história em si, não sobra uma cena, uma jogada de câmera, nada interessante.
Enquanto roteiro, ao flertar com a história de Medeia citada, também fica muito aquém, nada muito justificado, nem sequer o veredito do tribunal é claro aqui. O filme termina de uma forma tão insossa, que a impressão que dá é de um vazio no mau sentido. Não consegui embarcar tanto nas reflexões, mesmo porque fiquei procurando conexões com o mito grego e divagando em narrações que nunca sabemos direito o real impacto.
Por mais que tenha uma história forte, o fato de ser todo narrado pesou para ser um filme difícil de acompanhar por duas horas. Não há um flashback, ou uma fotografia que seja. E sem confrontar pontos de vistas, utilizando de diálogos muito monotônicos, como feito de forma completamente diferente em "Doze homens e uma sentença", o filme perdeu a chance de ser muito mais potente do que fora. Uma pena.

Debut with a feature film between fiction and autobiography: documentary-like and phenomenological, rigorous, dry, minimalist? No: a catatonic staging ("Heart of Glass", Herzog '76?) that tortures the viewer unless he is a red carpet fetishist. A flood of words, we might as well have read the trial papers directly. A couple of problems, Medea's motherhood and the particular discomfort of the second generation, divided between the modernity of the adopted country and the ancestral nature of the one of origin, swept away by the actuality of the demographic winter. But at festivals you follow the calendar of their imaginary universe.

Saint Omer might be fiction, but Diop does not stray too far from her documentary roots. The film maintains a sense of naturalism even during its most tense moments. Diop’s directing style leans observational, as if she is watching and recording her screenplay’s effect on her performers.
Diop’s direction of Saint Omer is spare in style but dense in emotional intelligence, heavy with its own inquiries.
Far from a courtroom procedural, however, Saint Omer expands beyond those wood-paneled walls to consider how culture, colonialism, biology, and race determine what women experience—and how society views them because of those determinations.
Saint Omer is an intelligent, absorbing drama that had me under its intoxicating spell.
Throughout this dry, dull and bloodless movie, nothing like an honest grappling with the depravity of killing one’s own infant ever seems to occupy anyone’s attention.
Slowness of delivery can have a many different intentions and effects. In this case, the effect is sheer laziness. Visually illiterate, or pedestrian at best, this film matches it's inarticulate and vapid contents, and the preposterous dialog. It pains me to add that courtroom dramas usually try to animate the otherwise dull and boring setting. Here we are witnessing someone trying to make it even more unbearable.
