Do yourself a favor and ignore the critics on this one. It's a flawed, but very fun and very awesome ride. It's probably the only case I can think of when saying that a movie reminds me of a video game is actually a complement. For sure, it'sDo yourself a favor and ignore the critics on this one. For sure, it's a "check your brain at the door" kind of flick, but I don't think they could have found more ways to pack what is obviously the nerdy dreams of Zack Snyder (and, by extension, every nerd) into one movie. It's all very silly, and Snyder needs to work on writing better dialogue, but it definitely exceeded my (somewhat tailored thanks to the critics) expectations.… Expand

Sucker Punch, this movie was the best movie of 2011 hands down. The way they used reality and dreams were brilliant. The way they used reality and dreams were brilliant. And all of the characters were, well KICK ASS. 5 woman taking control of their life and trying to escape from a place they will rot and die in. They are fighting for their last chance and it was amazing! All 5 of the actress were breathtaking, so was the Madame. It was dark but still had you cheering for the girls to get free. The battle scenes were excellent, so was the script. Now if you dont like this movie maybe you should go see "Justin Beibers" new movie, because this movie was deep some people wont be able to grasp its dark and excellent message. In the movie it says we have the weapons we need, now we have to survive and fight. And the entire movie was them surviving and fighting for what was right...their FREEDOM. It was worth my 10 dollars, matter of fact im going to see it again tonight. LOVED IT, and i dont compare it to other movies because it's its own movie and we magnificent!… Expand

To be honest, if you go into this movie expecting some deep plot, or anything other than an action-centric movie, you'll be sorely disappointed. What action/thriller is deep or has such plot nowadays? Sucker Punch, for me, reminded me of a mash up of comics, anime, video games and femme fatale style heroics which, if you're a fan of, you'll enjoy. The other mash up involved here that is interesting is how it jumps from the 40s style burlesque era to a strange, steampunk like world in the fantasies. This is, in no way, a perfect movie, and I'm not about to try to convince anyone that it has the best acting, CG, stunts or anything. What I did like was that the movie got me interested in the girls' dilemmas and even though there wasn't much background except on Baby Doll, Rocket and Sweet Pea, there was enough there to make me want to see them make it to the end. The idea that this girl, Baby Doll transforms so drastically from a school girl to a heroine in her alternate reality is just... well... cool. It's all silliness in the end but the fact is there is some great entertainment in this movie if you let go of the critic in you and just enjoy it for what it is. An action thriller. And a pretty good one too.… Expand

I couldn't help but think of a quote from Invader ZIM, of all things, after seeing this movie. Zim: That's so... stupid. Why would you do that? Hologram: Because it's *cool.*

I was surprisingly hooked into the movie from its opening scene! The visuals, the music, the storyline are all strong and make the movie enjoyable. I was jarred at first by the way the main character would escape reality. It was unexpectedI was surprisingly hooked into the movie from its opening scene! But it served its purpose and moved the story along. I feel majority of the women in the movie were strong and emotionally available and that too was engaging. Fantastic popcorn movie. Obviously the critics these days are out of touch with what's considered "fun" in a movie. This is film is just that, fun. Don't come looking for realistic situations with realistic fighting sequences. The best I canFantastic popcorn movie. Finally a movie worth seeing in the cinema's. Me and my friends enjoyed every bit of it. Although must say I can understand why not everybody is gonna feel the same way. Since me and my friends are game-fanatics in our late twenties and see all the references to this culture we appreciate this kind of movies very much. But even if you don't and your just open minded enough you will enjoy this just as we did. You could compare this movie to one of the most famous story's in history. Alice in wonderland. In that, a lot doesn't make sense but the world she falls in is just amazingly and surprisingly fantastic. As it should be in any fantasy.… Expand

Sucker Punch had fast pace action, good Plot, but at times was very confusing. The film was very emotional when it didn't need to be. Emily browning was pretty good in this film. Sucker was action packed but also very sad and dramatic.

This movie is quite a beautiful spectacle. Now sure, at most parts it seems to be target young men, but however there is just so much more under everything. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you know what you're going to get, then you'll be happy. If you go in expecting The Bicycle Thieves, expect to be left wanting. The film is incredibly visually engaging, and the soundtrack goes well with the scenes.

The fantasy sequences do get a bit repetitive at first, but your expectations are soon subverted. The storyline seems a bit weak, even if you take the time to understand it. But I'll still give it a 7 because I really enjoyed the movie, all told.… Expand

First off, I love all the negative reviews of this movie. Critics (the public) are so quick to judge. This movie did what it promised. A trip through a dark reality depicted with a good taste of original style. Snyder knows how to create aFirst off, I love all the negative reviews of this movie. Snyder knows how to create a powerful opening scene. The man uses slow motion. So what? he does it well. As for the acting? It was appropriate. It didn't need Oscar performances. And for the soundtrack? Very fitting, and very well chosen. This movie was not hard to grasp. I pity those who were confused. And if you're asking yourself "where were the characters?" They were stuck in between the realms of the different realities. Funny, that's where he wanted the audience to be. If you didn't become engaged with this movie then go back home and watch the Social Network...… Expand

I liked this film. I'm not sure that I understood it, but I did _like_ it. I walked out of the cinema satisfied that I had just watched a movie that entertained and has left me pondering various elements for the last day or so. I willI liked this film. I walked out of the cinema satisfied that I had just watched a movie that entertained and has left me pondering various elements for the last day or so. I will definitely watch it again to see if I can make more sense of it.

Unlike so much of what Hollywood is producing lately this was different. The storyline, the style, the action sequences, the anachronistic elements of the plot...it was all obviously and deliberately chosen to push boundaries and buttons. Which boundaries and which buttons appears to depend on what you bring with you...those who want to see misogyny will see it, those who want to see simple video-game action will see it, those who want to see nonsensical plot will see it. Those who go in with an open mind will probably come away with something more. I can see where the critics have traction - the plot is convoluted, the costumes are sexy, the action sequences seem to be video game inspired, there are sexist/misogynistic elements.

BUT

There is more. There are so many layers and explanations for those layers and many and varied. Are the imaginings of Babydoll actually happening? Are her 'team' various parts of her psyche? Is the whole thing her lobotmised "reality"? My friends and I love action movies, but of late they have become so predictable or over-the-top that we often pass comments and have little discussions during the film...not this one. We were all glued to it, straining to analyse and understand, and thoroughly entertained.

Wanna see 3 movies rolled into 1? This is it! This movie is not a pineapple pastry that you can easily sink your teeth into. This movie is a graphical extravaganza, meant to depict a thought from Snyder's mental depths. If you expect to be a part of the story, prepare to be disappointed. Consider it your misfortune if you are unable to enjoy this movie. You don't have the taste for it...yet.… Expand

Also, if you follow the story of her trying to escape both the asylum and herself, its REALLY good. The story is very deep, once you understand that the girls are shown that way to depict that they're abused and want freedom., and, once again, the main character is schizophrenic. The movie itself is very dark, and I don't recommend it for anyone under 15. Over all, very, very good movie.… Expand

This is one of my favorite films what can I say? However it has it's flaws (like many other films) but a really enjoyable film to watch.

The soundtrack is ACE! and just the whole mood of the film is on point!

Perfect guy movie. Hot girls, hot action, and it kept me interested throughout the whole movie. The concept of the insane asylum, created a really good environment to be immersed in. But largely, the meat of this film is a very self-aware critique of the very sort of movie it portrays, forcing an aware viewer to reconsider his perspective on the sexualized action flick. This movie, if you pay attention, should force you to question the basest desires of your taste without resorting to a heavy handed dismissal. Remember, when the action sequences start, WE, the audience, are those deplorable characters looking for a cheap thrill before we consider the personal story that Sweet Pea alludes to. We need to reconsider what this story is really about, and undermine our self-centeredness. You're not going to like this movie unless your willing to accept that sucker punch. Yes the visual are awesome, the soundtrack is awesome, the hot girls are awesome, the steam-powered zombie nazis are awesome, the samurai warrior opening fight scene is awesome. The most important part about this film is it ends with something that you will want to talk about, argue about and discuss as it's actually quite a smart film that plays off both the reality of sexual abuse in 1950's mental asylums and what the mind can do to deal with such situations. However saying ANY MORE will reduce your enjoyment of this movie. Just don't go in expecting 300 with chicks. This has more in common with an episode off the Twilight Zone than 300 (aside's from Snyder's son) and because of this I thoroughly enjoyed it. However I'm very interested in what was left out and will be picking up the Director's Cut DVD (R-rated) release as soon as it comes out to clarify the 2 distinct endings that I am left contemplating.… Expand

I think a lot of people have missed the plot in more than one way. I think there are layers of symbolism that the critics have totally missed or do not understand and therefore simply see it as a rambling sequence of one action packed, effects showcase after another. The whole concept is an escape from reality, therefore to try and pigeon hole it in to some kind of reality, so it makes sense to you as a critic is simply going against the flow of the film and just not accepting it for what it is.

Loved it and always will, it goes down in my list of all time favourites.… Expand

For anyone at all familiar with Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch", I'm going to say something very obvious: This is not a film in the traditional sense. It is a visual feast, an exercise in directorial self-indulgence, a self-important tale of excess violence, sexuality, and intensity. Much has been said of the obvious flaws in "Sucker Punch." However, in spite of all of that, it remains imaginative, original, and deserves to be seen and discussed.

I absolutely believe that this is the sort of film that requires the viewer to go in with a realistic expectation of what you will experience. Not in terms of knowing the plot or details of the story, but understanding that they are not going to see a typical film, with a typical story arc and typical characters. The story has shades of "Pan's Labyrinth" and the style blends Snyder's previous films "300", "Dawn of the Dead" and "Watchmen" with Anime and many popular adventure video games. The action is elaborate and often stunning, but exists mainly as an excuse to use every flashy directing trick in the post-Matrix book. This idea could have gotten old very fast but having a different style of combat each time we descended into Baby Doll's imagination kept things fresh enough to not lose momentum. The soundtrack is made up of remixed well-known tunes (including Queen, the Beatles, and Jefferson Airplane) and a pounding score that honestly does a lot towards keeping things interesting and pouring as much intensity and atmosphere into the scene as possible. The actual story to "Sucker Punch" may seem like little more than a device to get us to each action piece, but there is more substance to this film than the vast majority of critics have been willing to admit. I will not claim the acting to be anything more than it is: serviceable. Other than two of the main characters, little back story is provided and the other characters are there merely to provide other eye candy or in the mens case, be evil and give us a reason to care about the fate of "baby doll", the bombshell cover girl. But I have read many reviews that paint the story as an "incoherent plot" and a "jumbled mess." This is one of those times where I wonder if I watched a different film, or if the large majority of the viewing public lacks the basic intellect or attention span to "get" any film that doesn't follow traditional narrative structure. I don't say this to be arrogant or rude, I really don't. But I do have to say it because once again a film with complaints such as these thrown out from all directions ended up being quite easy to follow. The plot was certainly coherent and featured an arc that concluded the story and themes presented for the main characters. The device of the main action scenes were clearly in the imagination of the main character to get through traumatic experiences. I realize that following a story from the real world, to an imagination, and then an imagination from there requires some attention be paid, but it is not too much to ask when it is laid out for the viewer. This is why I will defend Sucker Punch from those reviews that claim it is all visual impact, with no emotion or visceral stimulation. The overarching theme may be ridiculous, silly, or incredulous, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. To dismiss all of this as simply violent soft-core porn on the basis on the misogynistic school-girl outfits and dark subject matter is doing a disservice to the creator as well as it's audience.

I may seem over defensive in my praise for the merits of "Sucker Punch", but as I previously stated this is nowhere close to a perfect film. In fact, it's almost impossible to give a rating to because you first must establish what you are rating. Is it my enjoyment of the picture? I certainly enjoyed myself from beginning to end. Should I rate it on a critical scale in terms of how well-made it is? Even to someone that absolutely loathed the story, subject matter, and characters, it would be impossible to deny the craft behind the camera of Zack Snyder. It is a well-produced film with absolutely gorgeous cinematography and many memorable visuals. But the drawbacks are as clear as day. It is over-the-top to an absurd degree. It is overly self-indulgent. It features a lot of mediocre acting. It contains cringe-worthy dialog. It's not surprising that many find the overall theme to be ridiculous. That's not even getting into the supposedly "girl-power" message being undermined by its clear objectifying nature. But "Sucker Punch" is unwilling to limit itself to audience expectations, riding the imagination of its creator and giving us something different and daring. In my opinion, this something we could use more of in today's film landscape. Love it or absolutely detest it, but don't dismiss "Sucker Punch" as just a mindless action flick. It at least gives a valiant attempt to do more. 7.5/10… Expand

I am unsure what people were expecting going into this movie. About an hour before I went to see Sucker Punch I watched the preview which was my first introduction to the movie. Imagery and visuals were very well down but found myself bored about 2/3 through the film. The storyline was also hard to follow at times and found my self confused when exiting the theatre. It's got a pretty good storyline, loads of fun action, and hot girls jumping around, killin' folks with guns, swords and knee-high boots. But it's more than just that.

This movie is action movie fun in it's purist form. Forget your worries from all the negative reviews, and just go see. You'll be glad you did.… Expand

Well...Ok, I can agree that this film isn't that great but its sure one hell of a good punch. A punch so strong, it'll knock the senses out of you. Anyways, here is my review:
The Storyline:
Basically, it's about a girl trying to escape a hospital for the mentally insane (Why females only? I'm guessing this hospital is for girls that are "crazy?"-and-in-their-early-twenties-with-a-hot-body...hm?) and so she's trying to get other girls to do the same and all they need is a couple of items and they are all set...it sounds easy but it isn't so easy after all.
So what does this have to deal with Nazi zombies, fire-breathing dragons, robots, huge-ass samurai warriors, etc? Well, whenever Babydoll (Emily Browning, the girl I was talking about) closes her eyes she imagines an alternative universe that has the same goals and objectives but in different situation. Zack Snyder wants us to see some sort of similarities between the two worlds (reality and fantasy) so what ever is happening in the fantasy world is happening in the real world, mostly involving the characters. Characters are: Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens). Let us not forget about Madame Gorski, "love your accent by the way" who is played by Carla Gugino. Mr. Blue (Oscar Isaac), who isn't a bad character but when he's acting like a **** he becomes a **** and you'll hate him after what he did. The story is (to me) well told and there are moments in which you just gasp in awe and in shock. Female Empowerment:
The girls are just trying to play as what the guys in the film are seeing them as, sexy-ass sluts. But I think Zack Snyder is trying to tell us that females can be viewed as sex objects because a lot of people see them that way (reason why they wear tight, barely naked outfits in the real world and also in the fantasy world) but the females just don't see themselves that way and so the fantasy world helps us to see that they are just a band of females trying to survive so they'll do anything to survive. Nuff said. BTW: "Don't mess with these chicks, they'll kill you." Visuals:
Impressive and well worth my time especially the fantasy world, when the 5 of them are trying to complete each dangerously-crazy missions.
Characters:
The guys are punks and even though (sometimes) Babydoll looks like she's about to die, she has a moments of "lets beat the crap out of them." The girls are dimensional and very serviceable; they laugh, cry, yell and scream (Good one Abbie) so nothing outstanding but...serviceable. Overall,
Didn't want to talk too much because it's just a film but the critics hit it hard and I didn't think it was fair for Zack Snyder or for any new directors that make up their own ideas to be assaulted with bad reviews (come on "4 zero stars."). Anyways, I think Zack Snyder stepped up a notch from his other movies like taking flight with the owls or seeing tight-thong warriors in a bloody battle. This one was just...it blew my mind. I give him credit and just for you guys to know, it ends with a happy but unusual note. I know that Zack Snyder likes to darken his movies and this one was pretty much unnerving (sometimes even depressing). An 8.5… Expand

After being to the movies and watching this. Am I satisfied with what I saw? Hell Yah!

Sucker Punch will literally punch you in the stomach. The action sequences are excellent. You never take your eye off the screen even for a second. IAfter being to the movies and watching this. Am I satisfied with what I saw? Hell Yah!

I think that it has a great cast, great script and great plot/story. Even if critics said that this has awful script and story. But in my opinion I really loved the story. I just loved it for what it really is, an action packed movie with girls in it, what more can I say?? It is basically a modern day Alice in Wonderland!

I was surprised by how much I liked the film. While I can see why people say the movie is misogynistic, I don't think it is at all, or rather it is only superficially so. Yes, the girls in it are victimized, yes the costuming is straight from Victoria's Secret, but if you look behind that, at what the film says about the characters you see something very different. Baby Doll (a supremely ironic name for someone as tough as she) is in a terrible situation. She is locked away in an asylum with a timetable for lobotomy, most people would curl up into a mewling, whining ball n her place (I know I would;. Baby Doll does, not, almost before the key turns in the lock behind her she is plotting escape. From the opening seconds she is overmatched and outgunned. Yet, throughout, in her fantasy world and more importantly in real life she never gives up, ultimately engaging in an act of self-sacrifice. She wears a skimpy skirt, that's the outside, inside she is consistently brave, loyal, resourceful and resilieant. At the beginning of the film she has an opportunity to kill her hated stepfather. She doesn't take it, an act that hints at the real strength of her character. This is not a movie by a man who hates women, but by a man who loves and admires women in a man's sort of way.

If this film were made without dragons, or zombies or robots, if the reality scenes were expanded to fill it, it would be an arts movie and the critics would have LOVED it. But, the literal monsters share the screen with the human monsters. I think that because this is a movie that has a lot more to it then first meets the eye, because of it's strong female characters, because of the monsters, and yes because of the costumes, this movie will be around long after most arts films are forgotten.… Expand

Im sick of seeing the real crap *cough* Black Swan *cough* get all these rave reviews and the good, original, though provokeing stuff get tossed by the wayside. The layering was brilliant, the soundtrack not just rocked it out but ADDED to the movie (so many don't these days) and I haven't stopped taking it apart, turning everything around, and putting it back together since I saw it. Loved this movie.

It is interesting that as of April 2nd, the user reviews have about 3 times as many favorable as unfavorable reviews, while the critics numbers are just the reverse. Seems the reviewers are out of touch or perhaps they have had their sensibilities dulled by watching too many bad movies until they can't recognize a gem in the rough when they see it. Because so many people, particularly critics, seem clueless about what this film is trying to say, let me spell it out. I'll stop short of spoiling the ending, but I'll lay out a good deal of plot along the way. I recommend those who have not seen the film yet to stop reading reviews and just see it and judge for yourself.

The movie states its message in the opening few shots. You can watch the first six minutes at this link (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/6185190/exclusive_six_minutes_of_sucker_punch/) and hear the details. It is a poetic description of the power and role of guardian angels, which are just mythological embodiments of our innermost selves. "Everyone has an angel, a guardian who watches over us. We can't know what form they'll take: One day old man. Next day, little girl. But don't let appearances fool you. They can be as fierce as any dragon. Yet they're not here to fight our battles, but to whisper from our heart, reminding us it is us, it's everyone of us who holds the power over the worlds we create."

Simple and direct. As we are being told this, the we see images that show a young woman lose her mother and then be set upon by her step-father. She tries to defend her young sister from his advances, but accidently kills her. He talks to the police and takes her to a nearby asylum for the criminally insane and while she is being processed, she overhears an orderly telling her step-father that he's arranged a doctor to give her a lobotomy in five days in exchange for $2,000.

We also learn that the main therapist, Dr. Gorski, uses drama to help the girls there to gain some level of control by playing music and having them act out what they are feeling. There are shots of the young woman working and looking for a way out. Then we see her on a couch in the doctor's office, being told she is in control of the worlds she creates in her mind.

Suddenly, we see her about to receive the lobotomy, but then the scene shifts and we are watching a dramatization of a lobotomy on stage. Baby Doll, as she is called, is in a different place with the same people, a high class brothel and night club run by the orderly. The girls are his prostitutes being held there against their will. She is told she must learn a dance to please the customers. The doctor, now a dance instructor and madam, tells her, "Your fight for survival starts right now. .... You have all the weapons you need. Now fight." Baby Doll next finds herself at a Zen temple with a wise man who actually gives her weapons and tells her the same thing. After defeating 3 monstrous warriors, she demonstrates she is ready to fight. (This sequence is awesome and powerful.)

Many people seem to think this is a fantasy she creates to cope with her situation, but it becomes clear at the end that the events we see in this alternate reality have corresponding events taking place in the asylum. She is working on her plan to escape.

She gets four other women to agree to help her get the things they will use to escape while she, Baby Doll, dances to distract the men. It doesn't take Freud to understand that "dancing" is a euphemism for sex or some other sexual distraction. Each time she "dances," the movie shows a fight scene of high fantasy where the five are fighting inhuman soldiers, dragons, and robots. They are fighting for their survival and the action dramatizes what is at stake if they fail. Some see this only as titillation for fanboy masturbation, but they are using their sexuality against their oppressors, so it stands to reason that they embody what the men fantasize about.

I won't say more, but this should give you enough to see past all the bull that critics are slinging at this film and allow it to be judged on its own merits. I think it is an attempt at contemporary mythology, using imagery from video games and the bad old days of the 1950s when women were seen only as housewives and whores. That they can fight against this system and gain a victory of sorts ought to be uplifting and empowering. The movie repeats its message at the end, that each of us holds the power to change our situations, provided we are willing to fight.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. why? is the question i ask myself when i read all of the negative reviews on this film. sure it is not the greatest movie ever made, but it is not deserving of two out of five stars. the story is one you have to think and follow, which is probably why most people got mad : because they just wanted to go see a movie with hot babes and action, they didn't want to think. The story tells a great tale of self sacrifice for the greater good, and it does so by adding intense fight scenes and and a great musical score, the direction was great. Absolutely loved it, Snider finally found his titanic.… Expand

I'm watching it again this weekend, the movie was awesome, it keeps me wanting more. The music was great as well, fitted each scene perfectly, you can't compare it to any movie, its definitely way more complicated then Inception, I have to say. Everyone go see it, it was totally worth my $9. The only thing I didn't quite like was the length, which was too short, it could use some character development, so I could understand each character better, it could have been longer, but still it was fantastic, just a minor flaw, so definitely a 10/10! I LOVED IT, IT WAS AWESOME, it was good to finally see some originality in a movie, even though how everyone thought the concept was simple, no one could have done it better then Zack Snyder, this definitely goes into my list of favourite movies of all time! I may be biased with writing this because this is hands down my favorite movie of all time and all the people I went to see it with loved the story, graphics, the soundtrack, and the movie in general, but I digress. I see absolutely no flaw in this movie. I was never bored while watching this, which I can't say for the majority of movies I have seen in my life, including some of my favorites. The cutaway dream sequences were awesome to watch and made the movie better as a whole. The plot was solid and engaging. The only problem I have is not with the movie, but it's reviews. I suppose critics are just so jaded that when something good actually good comes out, but seems demeaning to women or something, it must be taken down. I've read the comment that this movie has good graphics but a bad story many times and all I can think is "What do you think Avatar is?". At least Sucker Punch is like nothing else that has ever been in theaters. Though I do have to admit to the fact that this movie does target a select audience, specifically young people. The movie basically revolves around the interests of 13-30 year olds. So I suppose people who don't fall in to that category might not see eye to eye with what this movie has to offer. To those people I say, don't watch it. If you didn't want to see a movie with scantily-clad women killing things, don't watch that movie. All in all, this is an opinion, like any review, so I will finish by saying that it is a great movie, as long as it pertains to your interests. Otherwise, don't watch it. P.S. Before the movie I had those negative reviews from the critics in the back of my mind, and I found that they weren't accurate at all. Right from the start of the movie to the end, I didn't look around, didn't talk and really tried to engage myself into it, and I came out of the theatres amazed and inspired. I couldn't figure out how some reviews said it was terrible or even sexist. This was one of those movies where you obviously can't just watch it and say "oh that was bad" or "oh that was good", you literally had to put yourself into it or watch it with your heart, may sound stupid but you could feel these powerful mixed emotions of the characters like how babydoll's mother died and she was alone and even more depressed after her sister's death (not a spoiler but from the synopsis) if you payed attention you would probably feel the same way. If your parents died and you accidently killed your siblings in the midst of protecting them then placed in an unpleasant environment and forced to do unpleasant things to survive, how would you feel or what would you choose? To simply die, or to fight for your survival or what's left of it? Sure the actors were hot girls in hot outfits, and dancing around, playing with guns like what many have called "a fantasy for 13 year old boys" but that is an understatement.The girls were part of the main aspects but that shouldn't be the only thing you would to be watching for. They all had struggles and it showed how they chose to fight instead of just giving in and it wasn't just about how they dressed as well as how many people thought it was "pretending to be a feminist fable of empowerment". It showed on screen, and by using the dream to portray how they're able to gain courage from battling all these grotesque creatures and situations they can deal with what's in reality and it may seem even less difficult to do so, how anything is possible and this showed powerful emotions, not just boring,pointless,or even pure violence. Zack Snyder's actors were all female, and they all "chose" to audition for it, if it was sexist and overall a stupid, terrible, and unclear story then he wouldn't have a cast. Also his cast would not have put so much effort in their training for the movie as well as finding their deep inner emotions just so they can portray the pain for their characters.This movie can be confusing to understand at times, but it was a movie where you really had to let it sink in. It's not where if you looked away for a moment then came back to it, you would understand what was going on, you had to watch everything little bit of it. There was so much emotions along with the music, there was no need for too much dialogue, it showed that is if you payed attention and not forcing yourself to stay the whole 2 hours just to finish the movie. Sucker Punch deserves so much more credit, and I really think that these "Critics" should reconsider rewatching it, and this time "actually watching" it, meaning engaging yourself into everything whether it was the music, the dialogue, the expressions, the emotions, the story, the visuals, just everything, whereas you're just watching any average film where you can take washroom breaks, look around or somewhere, then leave. All I can say is this movie was brilliant, not a masterpiece but it was something, and it was not as bad as it "seemed" just because of how some people saw it as "a fantasy world for little boys watching hot girls gunning down zombies and fighting samurais."… Expand

Once again, as it seems to be with Metacritic, the user reviews are right, and the 'critics' are wrong. Is this moving super amazing and Oscar worthy? Nope, not by a long shot. Maybe if the critics stopped typing with the significant others over their shoulders, they could admit how they feel about the woman, the battles, the guns, etc...

People need to stop hating on Zak Snyder for being for original and perhaps....different, and sit back, relax, and enjoy a good movie.… Expand

I enjoyed this movie. My friend told him that his friends thought that the movie had no/poor story, so I went it just expecting a 'leave your brain at door' action-fest.

The story is pretty straightforward and simple...I guess some folks just found the narrative approach confusing (I did hear people leaving the theatre stating that they didn't understand the story or the events). In any case, I liked the story and the resolution.
I liked the few action sequences and even the music. The anachronism (in the music and the elements, like gear and weapons, in the battles) was quite amusing. IMHO, it was a good movie as a whole.
I'd recommend it to anyone who's into videogames, anime, RPGs, and tabletop stuff like Warhammer, as there are definitely 'nods' in that direction.
And @Bartisajoke: those weren't zombie Nazis...there weren't any Nazis in WW I (to which the trench warfare scene alluded to).… Expand

After the long wait has come to the cinema what promises to be one of the best films this year, for over a year we know of its existence but it was only 5 months ago that the advertising campaign began to get acquainted.

First of all I would like to clarify a point and that you as readers deserve the full and not only the prejudices of the server that review, I say this because, well because after reading several "reviews" saw only the prejudices of the "experts" on film saying the film was based purely on the special effects which is totally false and that there be no doubt uphold my point.

Sucker Punch puts us in the history of Babydoll (Emily Browning), a young woman who after losing her mother is hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital by her stepfather (Gerard Plunkett), the place is under the control of Dr. Vera Gorski (Carla Gugino), a psychologist who tries to help the young and the head of stretcher Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac) who does the dirty on psychiatric treatment.

There he meets Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) who are also "orphan"and convinces them to find a way out, of course the girls are afraid to be discovered but after analyzing the circumstances in which they are and that their situation is not truly called to live decide helping Babydoll.

To get your free 5 things should get a map, fire, a knife, a wrench and something unknown, while getting everything the viewer is transported to different dimensions of reality as a brothel, a Medieval fortress, a Shinto temple, a Bullet train and even a battle of the Second World War.

Not delve much into history and it would take the joke going to the movies, but I can assure you that the story is deeper than it appears you can see, a council is to observe the small details as these give us clues of how it could finish the story.

There are many symbols and some of its meaning is implied by the connotation that we give to the first, take nothing for granted this would be a mistake as there are times when it seems that the narrative is rather short but if you look at previous scenes will all is there (later I will explain why this happens), Zack Snyder is hard to tell his story so that forced us to examine part of what happens or they say the characters.

The battles are the best ever seen, then applied the phrase "Not because you are a woman I will have compassion" in comparison to other films where it looks for female characters are "hard" Sucker Punch takes it to another level making the players are really confident during the battle and that the blows that tips them look real, which many appreciate.

One thing to note is that the sequences are professionals, I mean, actresses had to train for 3 months - 8 hours per day in order to achieve the sequences as the director wanted, they suggested not only make the style "pretend as I hit you "but really learn how to perform the movements and how to use weapons, something that I personally see it as an extra in the film.

The set design is very good, as I said before the film transports us to different dimensions and of course each has very specific features from climate to architecture, all these dimensions we also offer a particular story as we have seen in the animated shorts are not only locations where the heroes fight each of these worlds has a story behind it.

Attire is "subtle" but very appropriate to emphasize that decade the main story is set in addition to the girls'dressing rooms to please even the most demanding and the girls will give you some ideas.

Music is a good point in the movie because they look a little more scenes and helps to "highlight" certain points in history, especially when Babydoll was concentrated to enter their worlds.

The flaw I see him, in my opinion, is the issue because there are parts in the sequences where you can see a few seconds to cut scenes but nothing to reduce the experience of this is that to get the PG -13 had to cut 18 minutes of film as well as 3 scenes (including a love scene of Emily Browning) complete the film because he was rated R, as a consolation actresses have confirmed that contain Blu-ray plus the extended version a surprise.

Photography in the film is also important because the plans which show the actresses are very very good and this also affects other aspect is the makeup that is quite appropriate to highlight the features of the actresses and actors support.

To complete the film's central message is something that we often overlook in life, the last sentences of the film give us a lesson or are we becoming more clear what we already know, besides showing us one of the best sides the human being. I think this part is that they forgot all the "experts"in their reviews and wanted to be "professional" and criticize just to criticize without analyzing the context.

One of my recommendations for this weekend whether or not action movie lovers.… Expand

And this is where it's audience is divided - if you are an average kinda guy/girl you will probably find the story mediocre to somewhat annoying, but if you have an artul appreciation of films and the intelect to understand beautiful metaphors and complex imagery, you will love this film as much as i do.… Expand

I was very excited about the nature of this movie when I first heard about it. I have enjoyed most of Snyder's previous films, especially Watchman, and I knew from the trailer, the potential that this movie had. Zack has always seemed, to me,I was very excited about the nature of this movie when I first heard about it. I have enjoyed most of Snyder's previous films, especially Watchman, and I knew from the trailer, the potential that this movie had. Zack has always seemed, to me, like the perfect director for bringing all of the style and panache that we have come to love from our favorite Comic, Anime, and Video Game franchises, to the big screen. I was very excited about this movie, because it represented the next step forward in legitimizing this over the top style that has seemed uniquely present in the pages of our comics, and the CGI sequences of our favorite games. As I watched this movie it was everything that I hoped that it would be and more. I was fairly content with the idea that the story would be secondary in my mind, to the face value of bringing the true spirit of neo-fantasy to a cinematic experience. Unlike many of you who watched this movie, I was pleasantly surprised by the story and the more I contemplated the various levels, and abstract concepts, the more impressed I was with this vehicle. One of the great aspects to this movie is that Snyder essentially turns our imagination upside down by presenting to us the fantasy and all the while forcing us to imagine reality. The imaginative lengths that Baby goes to in order to conceive of and envision what it will take for her and her friends to survive, where inspiring. The central theme of empowerment through imagination seems to be lost to the very critics who fail to tap into their own imaginations. The premise of the movie is simple, our female lead Babydoll who was wrongly institutionalized by his stepfather is trying to escape before she undergoes a lobotomy. Backed up by four friends and armed with her wild imaginations and allegedly amazing dancing skills which is the portal to her amazing imagination, fighting oversized ninjas in one moment and an army of zombies in the next. The story was passable, the action sequences were beautiful and it was all visually compelling, the only special effects that a Snyder movie can give. But what I really love about the movie is the rocking soundtrack, my favourite was Sweet Dreams in the opening sequence of the movie, sang by Emily Browning herself. Female empowerment and the fight for freedom are the main themes of the movie. It's about a woman taking control of her own destiny. To be honest, the hook for me to watch this was Emily, I really liked her in Lemony Snickets and have been waiting years for an exciting new movie from her, didn't really like The Uninvited. And now I understand why Christopher Nolan chose Zack Snyder for the reboot of Superman, he's another visionary filmmaker doing something rarely seen in Hollywood anymore, an original project. If you want some mindless-beautiful-looking-fun this is the movie to watch, this movie is to 2011 what The A-team was to 2010. Most entertaining movie of the year so far.… Expand

I think the nay-sayers were expecting something more than what was promised here - an over-the-top CGI funfest that borrows from HK film, anime, and mashes up a slew of genres. Zack Snyder creates another masterpiece. There is no doubt that Zack is one of the best Directors out there right now, but his film's aren't for everyone, especially in the case of Sucker Punch. As I like to say, he creates action art, his film may not be outstanding when it comes to story telling, but the man knows how to Direct. Sucker Punch is an absolute fun time, and is probably one of the most enjoyable films of the year, unless you're an uptight snobby critic who only enjoys films like 'The Kings Speech'. It has it's moments where I would think to myself, "I'm not sure if that worked" but it didn't happen enough for me to have anything bad to say about this film. There is no reason I wont be seeing this film at least 3 more times in theaters. The acting is fantastic, the story is a bit off key, but the Directing is why I'm giving this a 10 out of 10. Go see this film NOW!… Expand

I loved this movie! Seeing it in IMAX certainly helped since the visuals are incredible. The storyline could have been a little more fleshed out but was solid enough to keep me interested. I saw this with a friend and my son. Ages 41, 32, and 19. We all enjoyed the movie. It took a minute to get going and the story was a little odd, but the action and fantasy eye candy kept us glued. People seem to misunderstand the plot of this movie. It is not just about five girls escaping an insane asylum, but it is also about how one unstable girl views the world. The confrontations are the best scenes because they turn into sci-fi and fantasy action fests with nods to modern nerd classic movies and video games (Ones I saw: Halo 2, Lord of the Rings: Two Towers, Call of Duty, God of War, Gears of War, etc). The problem with the film, it's biggest problem, the one that every critic has encountered is this: Sucker Punch has been released at a time where the social norm for films is to be tepid, unimaginative and bland. For such a film to overload the sences with such a mish-mash of special effects, roaring rock soundtrack and action scenes just bucks too strongly from the social norm for people to understand.… Expand

I'm not exactly sure why, and I'm not a critic so I don't have to explain it, but this movie just made me feel happy somehow. Maybe it's just the visual style, maybe the brainless way the plot moves forward. I don't know, but I liked it.

This movie was brilliant. I saw it at my friends facebook, everybody was looking forward to watch this, but I had my doubts and I thought it will suck deep... And it didn't, and I enjoyed it a lot. The lobotomy part is a bit too much for me,This movie was brilliant. If Inception, Matrix and Kill Bill were mixed into one you'd get a general idea of what this movie was supposed to be like... But wasn't. Was much more and much different regardless the obvious similarities. This movie melted my brain. I loved it. People are looking for something more than a movie. This was an experience. I want to see this movie again. The plot was confusing but it doesn't matter. I love it!!!!

Despite all the hatred that has been put upon this movie , when I actually saw it , I found myself entertained by a film that is a perfect action package. The history fits perfectly here, the delusions of a young girl that are presented metaphorically by a side of magic , a different world where the actions resemble to what's happening in real. Then the ending comes ... the ending was not well-made , or maybe was , but the tension that is build throughout the film it's not resolved , it is amplified by the endless suffering that is smashed upon the Babydoll character. When watching the film you will create a bond between you and the hot girls, beautiful and sexy to death , then all this is throwed in your face in the end. That's my only complaint , despite that, this film is perfect.… Expand

This movie was awesome, not good. Do not go for the story. Go for the dumb fun of hot women fighting awesome things. If I want good story, good acting, I'll watch Schindler's List.

The solidarity amongst them in lambasting this film also displays the lack of backbone - all of them hated it... really? The film accomplishes what it wants, very enjoyable and if you like special effects you wont be disappointed. Maybe it could have been better in plot but it's not that bad.

Among these factors was the pummeling the film took from critics including would-be luminary AO Scott.

Well Mr Scott , it's time to retire.
The music has apparently gotten too loud and you want those pesky kids to just turn it down.
"Suckerpunch" is a huge success - it advances the language of film , and it's essential integration into the experience of music and video games, in a way that is dazzlingly effective.
I can think of no recent film (with the possible exception of "Inception') that has, and needed to, rock the boat with such rewarding vigor as Snyder's felicitous little masterpiece.

Scotts ire with the film seems to betray a deeper disgruntlement with the way movies are going rather than a specific critique with Suckerpunch (after all, advising a viewer, as Scott does, to inhale a bag of crystal meth to have a similar experience as watching the film is not only non-specific to his perception of the movies "problems", it also sounds like a damn fun idea).
No, what bothers old Mr Scott in apartment 3A is that it's all gotten too fast and too loud for his fragile , aging bones to handle.
Well, tough.
What Suckerpunch does is not easily defined, which is why perhaps, so many critics , like Mr Scott (he's not alone in his AARP sponsored rant) are failing to define it.
Suckerpunch lives up to its title - you don't see it coming - ever. Snyder's ability and determination to break the frame and the rules with it results in an experience you simply have no reference for, except perhaps from your dreams, and for that alone this film deserves to be seen.
But that's not all, not by a long way. The visuals, the "look" and feel of the film seem somehow to directly inject a buzz of adrenaline into whatever normally inaccessible (to movies) part of the brain that controls heart rate, erection, stimulation and delight. That's not to say Suckerpunch is for men only - perhaps even AO Scott can recall a time when women also liked to be stimulated.

In politics they say that when the going gets tough , people flock to the center. Well, sadly they're being lead by conservatives like An Old Mr Scott who, scared, alone in their apartments at night, listening to the rats and the plumbing, want the company of those they once held critical sway over. I'm reminded of that chilling performance moment from Lee J Cobb in Sidney Lumets "12 Angry Men" : having realized that , all along , he's been frustrated with his own son and not the kid on trial , on whom he wants to exact revenge, he pulls out the picture of his child from his wallet and rips it to pieces screaming : " Damn kids! You spend your life....".

Then he trails off into a tearful silence.
Follow suit please Mr Scott.… Expand

I actually really enjoyed this movie. Granted, it's not Oscar winner, but it really doesn't pretend to be. It is what it is, and makes no apologies. It is what it is, and makes no apologies. I've read professional "critics" write about how outlandish some of the scenes are, but I think that they kinda missed the whole point of the movie. Yes, it is outlandish; and no, the seemingly random fight scenes really don't tie into reality, but that's the beauty of it. The battle sequences take place in a fantasy within a fantasy and primarily serve as metaphors for missions or tasks that Baby Doll (the main character) et al. must accomplish. So, yes, these all take place in Baby Doll's imagination so they're allowed to be as unrealistic and outlandish as she wants it to be. My main gripe with this movie, however, is that Zack Synder (the director) was forced to maintain a PG13 movie, and the movie really seemed like he had been severely crippled and forced to work with one hand tied behind his back. Snyder is best known for his highly stylized and gory action sequences, but the ones in this movie just didn't seem on the same level as his other hits, "300" and "Watchmen". If only he'd been allowed to go all out and make his usual rated R or unrated movie, I think things would've turned out much better.… Expand

There are a lot of bad reviews, but i think that when you watch it, don't try to understand it as something linear, but just go with the flow and watch it as it is! I really loved the movie and I am sorry about being unable to give it a perfect score. But, the plot was to complex to be understood from the first time. In the 1950s, a young lady nicknamed "Baby Doll" (Emily Browning) is sent to an abusive psychiatric institution after the violent death of her child sister in a fight with her rapist step-father (Gerard Plunkett). Befriending four other patients (Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, and Jamie Chung) and a music therapist (Carla Gugino), Baby Doll embarks on a dangerous quest to escape the hospital before her lobotomy, which is scheduled five days from her admission. In an attempt to cope with her terrifying situation, Baby Doll views her surroundings in two surreal landscapes in addition to the existing one: The first being a brothel she is being forced to "dance" in; the second being a fantasy war zone complete with fire-breathing dragons, cyborg zombies, and demon samurai.

I find it odd that even though i rejected critic hits such as Black Swan and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo I am the one defending a film that has been widely criticized for being far too sexual. Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, Dawn of the Dead), who produces, directs, and is one of two writers (the other being Steve Shiyuba) for the film, states he is attempting to create create a feminist feature. Of course, it is a fine line between viewers gasping in horror at the clothing and actions the villains subject the young girls to and staring in delight. The difficulty of making the "bad parts" entertaining has been a problem throughout cinematic history (how many anti-war movies count as action flicks?), and there are a few elements (such as the provocative costumes) that go too far. Snyder stated in an interview that he felt some of the sacrifices he was forced to make for the studio undermined his messages by making the girl's life in the brothel sometimes appear "great," and I do believe his vision for the movie would have been much more respectful. Even so, there is very little parts in this picture that are actually sensual--we never see any nudity, there are no shots that ogle the girl's bodies, and there are no sex scenes. Sure, there is a tone that might be a bit suggestive, but really people are going to be far more titillated by images than mostly-accidental implications. No one cared at the graphic sex scenes in Snyder's 300, and really the costumes are far less suggestive and revealing than anything you will see in Step Up. Anyway, most people astute enough to find a sexual tone are going to be paying close enough attention to realize that the story is stating that such ideas are misogynistic (or are stimulated by most PG-13s).

Though the film's critics might not know it, the biggest problem is the unconventional ending and atmosphere of the picture (don't worry there are no spoilers). Not everything is solved by Baby Doll killing her abusers. It is not sexist to make show Baby Doll as physically powerless to her oppressors: The film has a far more realistic defense mechanism. This is a story about women (and guys too, for that matter) dealing with an atmosphere of despair. One part of the message is dealing with sexism, but Synder is obviously talking about broader issues as well. Baby Doll's fantasy worlds are not a weapon, they are a literal escape. She can imagine something so great the world around her doesn't matter.

In order to accept the film, you have to believe that is possible.

I think the picture that best compares to Sucker Punch is Precious. They both feature female characters in abusive and powerless situations, who's imaginations is what helps them survive. The difference here is that Precious imagines dancing in a big ballroom and Baby Doll imagines killing orcs. Understandably, while Precious is the more realistic and down-to-earth of the two, Sucker Punch is vastly more entertaining. Snyder has always been a stylistic director, and in the surreal landscape of Sucker Punch he is unencumbered by continuity points such as why '50s asylum patients have unlimited access to mascara. Sure, easily 90% of the movie is in slow-mo, but along with the visual effects team and Cinematographer Larry Fong (300, Watchmen) this is an entrancing picture with visuals that add too the power of the scenes.

An additional plus is Oscar Isaac (The Nativity Story) as the villainous orderly in the hospital. Isaac manages to come up with a unique brand of evil as a mild-mannered yet talkative pervert. The character is creepy, but the performance greatly adds to the role and actually enhances the meaning of the story.

Sucker Punch is a masterpiece. It might be hard to tell, but it is.… Expand
