Powerful, with an overwhelming sense of dread throughout as you watch the protagonist slowly descend into madness. Keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout and doesn't reveal its cards until a ridiculously shocking conclusion.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you. Or in the case of Curtis, that scary storms aren't out to get you. Take Shelter is a thriller that doesn't utilize scare tactics, but instead terrifies us with emotional dread and an enthralling story. Michael Shannon gives the performance of his career, alongside strong newcomer Jessica Chastain.

The movie restrains itself, making most of the film quite slow, but then it unleashes into an unsettling, terrifying tour de force. Michael Shannon is once again amazing, and Jessica Chastain is quickly becoming one of the finest actresses out there.

Curtis is also fully aware that his premonitions may not be real. At the same time he is preparing his shelter he is also seeking help for what may just be delusions.

This is the strength of Take Shelter. This film is superbly acted, and the story is laid out with precision. Going through the struggle with Curtis and his family is tense and mesmerizing. We know early on that Curtis is having these premonitions, but the way way Nichols unfolds the story, we are never quite sure when the real storm is coming.

While I enjoyed many aspects of Take Shelter I didn't connect with it in the way I do in films I enjoy the most. Usually I know immediately why I don't connect emotionally with a film, with Take Shelter I am having a hard time pinpointing the reason. Overall I think the story just feels a little dry, and although the tone of the movie is pretty tense the stakes just never felt as high as they could. A fine film, and a worthy watch, but in the end average.… Expand

Showing incredible vulnerability, Shannon stars in this character study of a broken man dealing with some troubling visions that threaten not only himself, but his relationships, and his marriage. Shannon does a great job portraying this troubled man. The writing here is also very good and it does a great job drawing connections between the storms, both exterior and interior. Overall, I would say this film has many strengths, but none that make it a truly great film. As it stands, it is pretty good, but is missing that "it" factor. Its main negative is that it is a touch too long, even though it is two hours. Some scenes could have been cut and the final result would have been just as effective. However, as it stands, the film shows both the talents of Nichols and Shannon quite well and show is a pretty emotionally impactful film.… Expand

One of the best films of 2011. A brilliant film in every way. Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain give Oscar caliber performances in this emotional drama. The last 30-40 minutes are some of the most intense I've ever seen. I absolutely loved it!

The film echoes a sense of dread and anxiety, channeling Shannon's dark, slightly unhinged, sullen aura, his trademark loomy stature and coarse features; he brings to life a "Curtis" character who is so malleable in his purpose, that no one can tell what's to happen next. Moreover, it feels as if what the audience is seeing has much more depth, as if another layer of subtext is just waiting to show itself. Nichols paints a portrait that is both astounding and riveting to hold on to, grimmacing and shuddering uneasily with anticipation and pent-up apprehension, driven by self-discovery, and down-right frightening in the most eerie of feelings. Although it is Shannon that reels in arguably the best performance of his career, more than worthy of an Oscar nomination, Chastain is incidentally moving, though mostly captured in her spot-lighted contemplation and worry. Notwithstanding near impeccable casting, editing, musical accompaniment, and cinematography, not all will appreciate "Take Shelter" due to its slothlike pace, frustratingly ambiguous, conflicting religious and metaphysical themes and interpretations, and its crazed, schizophrenic sequences. It's a remarkably sensitive portrayal of a family dealing with paranoid schizophrenia over a couple of generations. I don't think I've seen Jessica Chastain or Michael Shannon in a better role, and that says a lot because I think each have done outstanding work (Revolutionary Road, Boardwalk Empire, The Help, Tree of Life). I also have to mention Shea Whigham. He's such an effective actor - brings so much to every movie he's in, including All the Real Girls, Boardwalk Empire, and The Bad Lieutenant: PONO. Loved his take on Shannon's best friend.… Expand

This movie reminds me of a mostly forgotten film from the '80's called the Rapture starring Mimi Rogers. This is a great movie for the times and I'm sure we'll remember it ten or twenty years from now (unless the world ends before then, ha). Similar to Polanski's "Repulsion", this is a psychological tour-de-force, but on a grander scale. In contrast, Chastain and Shannon's performances are beautifully-restrained, with the exception of a couple appropriate scenes. Though everything wasn't perfect - the VFX (birds) were questionable, at times - the acting was spot-on and the sound cues/music set-up the dread perfectly. Frankly, I loved the story. If you haven't read a lot about it, leave it that way until you've seen the film. To me, the greatest scene wasn't the ending, but the scene where Shannon warns the community about the pending storm. Not since "There Will Be Blood" was there that much intensity in a scene and it was invigorating to see it on-screen. For those that don't like this or "Drive", they don't appreciate great direction. Don't miss this one, especially in theaters. It's quietly disturbing.… Expand

The funny thing about it is that's the most controversial. Some people really liked it until then, but for me the ending was key. But I guess it's all about what you took the ending to mean. Was Curtis crazy or was the apocalypse forthcoming? That I think is the key to loving or hating this. Outside of the ending it was a beautiful film with incredible acting and tension throughout. I had never seen Jessica Chastain before and only knew of Michael Shannon and Shea Wigham from Boardwalk Empire, but all three blew me away. If beautifully shot movies and good acting with thin story lines are your thing then you will love this. But if you need constant action to keep your interest and hate movies like Drive then this is a pass.… Expand

This is not to say that critics haven'tPart midwest drama, part horror flick, and part apocalyptic epic, the independent film Take Shelter, by newcomer writer/director Jeff Nichols, has somehow managed to fly under the pop culture radar. This is not to say that critics haven't taken notice. This small film has been lapping up awards at film festivals such as Cannes, Sundance, and Toronto and, in my estimation, it deserves every one.
The film introduces us to Curtis, played by Michael Shannon, a loving father and husband who has become plagued with dreams of a coming storm. Fearful that he might have inherited his mother's schizophrenic behavior, Curtis walks a paranoid line, preparing for catastrophe while questioning his own sanity. It's a modern day tale of Noah and his Ark.
What makes this film stand out is its subtlety. There are plenty of blood-chilling moments, but unlike modern horror flicks, we are not berated with the obvious or the gory. The nightmares are just as haunting as they are disturbing.
In addition to this, the story of Curtis and family, living a simple midwestern life, is also engaging. The characters are real and you can feel a real emotional connection in this drama.
Because of all of these things, as well as a few surprises that I won't mention, I consider Take Shelter to be the best film I have seen this year. I do not expect it to remain unnoticed among the general public for much longer. The clouds are building. Soon, the storm will break.… Expand

I saw this last night, but upon my return I couldn't put into words what I thought of the film. Now I think I can. This film is a wonderful character study. This film is a wonderful character study. You have this man named Curtis who has these vivid nightmares that suggest the world is going to end. He eventually becomes convinced that the nightmares are a prophecy for things to come. He takes drastic action to protect his family, so drastic that it threatens to rip his life apart. His wife thinks he's going crazy, even he thinks he might be going crazy. But he still continues on because he truly believes in what he's doing. I found this conflict fascinating, and the question that writer/director Jeff Nichols leaves us with is equally compelling. Is Curtis a paranoid schizophrenic or is he a prophet? The ending doesn't give you the answers you're looking for. This isn't the kind of film that's wrapped up in a nice tiny ribbon. It forces you to think. The performances are also terrific here. Michael Shannon really allows us to see the conflict brewing in Curtis. We can connect with his doubts as he makes decisions a sane person probably wouldn't make. Overall, this movie isn't for everybody. It's definitely an independent film in the sense that the pace is slow and the movie ends ambiguously, but for those of you looking for a film that will stick with you for days, be sure to check this one out.… Expand

Curtis has a good life: a loving wife, a daughter and a job with decent benefits. His nights as of late have been sleepless. Nothing is quite as frightening as the sight of a tornado cloud. No matter how far we run, a storm cloud will cover the distance. It is as if God's fury is actively playing out against us. If a storm were to hit tomorrow Curtis and his family would have no place to hide. Leaving his family in a gulch is no substitute for a storm plan so Curtis takes steps to update the shelter he has out back. It may cost some money, but they can't go without.

As plans are made without consulting his wife, Samantha (Jessica Chastain) everyone around him begins to worry. Loans are signed, money they don't have is spent on plywood. His mother slipped into psychosis at a similar age, is he going already? Mental illness or not, he won't give up his family. He can't be losing his mind, he's just providing for his family. To add to Curtis's distress, he can't seem to separate his dreams from reality. The editing of Take Shelter seamlessly blends the horrors of Curtis's nightmares with the minutiae of work, signing lessons and Lion's Club dinners.

Michael Shannon is a revelation as a man unraveling at a frenzied pace. He is primarily a character actor, but given a leading role in Jeff Nichols's second effort he mesmerizes. The pain in Shannon's eyes as he finds himself apologizing for one thing after another breaks your heart. The odds are unlikely of Shannon and Fassbender garnering Oscar nods, but one can hope.

First of all, the couple Shannon-Chastain is irresistible, with, as usual, a breathtaking performance by the one that use to date Eminem's mom in 8 Miles. Jeff Nichols shows us once more that he definitely a director to have a look on for the future, i'm thinking if he keeps doing on such great pieces of art, he'll become popular and brillant such as Nolan or Lumet !

Last year dramas were not specially good i think (example : Shame), with predictable plot, nothing happening.. Well, if you're thinking as i do, go ahead and have a look at Take Shelter, a movie you can't even describe.

During the movie, you can't tell whether Curtis (Shannon) is becomming a fool, or if an apocalyptic tragedy is about to occur. And that's all the 'magic' about this one. Curtis coworker and friend, Dewart (Shea Whigham) is here to make us wonder about Curtis as he follows Curtis' fall into madness. It's like Dewart's character was made to remind us that an apocalypse would never happen, trying to get this idea in Curtis' head, in vain.

Now i'm going to stop writing about Take Shelter, cause i don't want to spoil anything for anyone but i'm gonna end by saying that Nichols' movie deserve all the critical acclaim it have had since his release.

I wish I had read some of these user reviews before going to see the movie. Manipulative is the key criticism. The film-makers toy with viewer's emotions without grounding the plot in any real insights into human nature or interpersonal dynamics.

The film is a true battle between reality and fantasy, and Nichols creates the perfect mixture of suspense, drama, and insanity to feed it. Take Shelter is a horror film unlike any other because it has nothing to do with monsters or ghosts. Instead this film allows a feeling of terror to overwhelm us that is familiar and much closer to home.

Curtis LaForche (Shannon) is a hard-working father and husband who lives in a small town in Ohio. Samantha (Chastain) is his beautiful wife who you can tell is completely in love with him, and they have a young daughter named Hannah (Tova Stewart) who is deaf. I am diagnosed with Bi-polar. I have been around many people with Schizophrenia and have talked with them about it. I have yet to meet anyone yet who has said they have the hallucinations that people have in these movies that try toI am diagnosed with Bi-polar. I have yet to meet anyone yet who has said they have the hallucinations that people have in these movies that try to sympathize with people with mental illness. Even a Beautiful Mind, another train wreck of a movie that makes portrays mental illness symptoms in Hollywood form, a.k.a., a fairy tale. They don't exist. After watching this movie I am again insulted with the way this is all represented. Even the fighting with his friend is very phony. And no one possibly could get the ending of this movie cause it has an infinite amount of possibilities on what it could actually mean. I am glad I downloaded this movie and didn't waste my money renting it, or wasted a Netflix slot. As far as the acting, I didn't think that Michael Shannon's job was very difficult when I thought about it. He usually just has a blank face. Emotionless. Who couldn't do that? This is one of those movies that critic's like because it's a very different kind of movie. Maybe if they would have turned around and seen have the audience sleeping it would have altered there final scores. Only reason I gave it a 1 is because I did like a few of the camera shots. A few were memorable. But too movie as a movie whole. It isn't very memorable.… Expand

As far as this flick, I'll at least spot you the performances in this one... the very busy Jessica Chastain is remarkable; like Julia Roberts, but with talent. And Michael Shannon anchors this thing in a huge way... any suspense generated in this rather ponderous tale is generated by him and him alone. He is somehow capable of generating heartbreaking warmth and a sense of deep menace simultaneously. Kudos to them, but otherwise, this thing takes a loooooong time to travel virtually nowhere.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Wow is this movie overrated. There are some things to admire: the actors are all very good and the cinematography is outstanding. But, somehow it doesn't quite work. I'll point out one element that seems dishonest and safe: having the daughter be hearing-impaired means that the filmmaker doesn't have to really give her a point of view. That is dishonest because of course she has emotions. She just sits like a sweet little cherub (and she is adorable). But, she is given no room to react to the craziness around her. Kids have personalities too. Key scenes that show this: We get to see some of her spunk when she is feeding the dog some of her own breakfast in the opening scene...but later when her father gives the dog away we get no reaction from anyone--not even a mention of it! That shows me the filmmaker wasn't really interested in the real emotions of the family members. The whole film felt designed to get good reviews, but it felt very manipulative to me.… Expand

Not a disaster movie, just a depressing movie that doesn't make sense with no escapism factor. They tacked a cheesy ending on it because they knew no one would want to see this movie if it was honest about itself.

Please don't waste your time or money on this clunker. It would have made a nice 1 hour Twilight Zone episode, but nothing more or better than that. A groaner of an ending. ``YGHhhhhh - wish I stayed home

Everyone better "take shelter" from this mess of a movie. In a theater of 20 people on a cold Sunday night, 10 people, including me, walked out within the first hour. The entire first hour consisted of no plot development. Every 10 minutes this guy was having nightmares, and the only purpose of these dreams was apparently to scare the sh*t out of the audience. By the third nightmare, I was over it. Based on the spoilers I've read, apparently this crap just continues the entire length of the movie. It's a 15 minute plot spread out for what feels like an eternity. Clearly there must be someone in this movie --- either an actor, or someone behind the scenes --- who has a cult following, as it would be the only explanation as to why it has such high ratings on here. It was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. If you want to see great acting and "cinematography", or whatever the hell else people are saying is so great about this movie, you'd be better off seeing a movie whose writing didn't suck. Heard this movie did an incredible job of visually depicting his growing madness, and I wasn't disappointed. Great movie! I started to believe that the main character was going crazy. I started feel the pain he was going through. I really, really don't understand why this movie scored so highly with the critics. If I had to choose one word to describe it, it would be 'tedious'. Take Shelter est très loin de K-Pax, l'un des rares exemples qui me viennent à l'esprit, lui-même non exempt de quelque défaut comme... la mollesse. Mais si K-Pax avait parfois sa léthargie, alors Take Shelter n'a même pas deux de tension : il est si lymphatique et si mou qu'on tombe comme une masse rien qu'à essayer de le regarder.

En vérité, Take Shelter n'inspire aucune tension, aucune réelle interrogation, aucun doute, aucune ambiguité : on dirait vraiment un film réalisé par un écolier, le petit gars qui rentre de l'école et raconte sa journée banale, comme toutes les journées d'ailleurs, et il reste là à raconter sa journée qui n'intéresse personne mais à laquelle les membres de la famille adressent une vague attention polie parce que le gamin raconte toujours les mêmes conneries tous les jours.

Ce réalisateur est donc comme ce môme qui se regarde le nombril et raconte ses conneries, espérant capter l'attention sauf que tout le monde s'en fout de ses conneries. Putain, va te mettre dans ton abri, va pas t'y mettre, crie au loup, ne crie pas au loup, on s'en branle. Du coup, même la présence de la rouquine Chastain ne parvient pas à combler ce remplissage psychoteux plat et amorphe qui dure deux interminables heures. Echec complet.… Expand

Especially the ending, because it got me thinking about how many dream/visions he had that were true (or going to come true, like furniture suspended in mid air if your whole house blows away!). Like his best friend attacking him. Notice his wife was only in ONE dream, she didn't do anything AND THAT WAS WHAT TERRIFIED HIM! I hope there's a sequel to this movie, because they have to try to get back to that shelter... and fast. And everyone is going to try to bust in on him and his daughter.… Expand

The chemistry among the lead characters; especially the relationship between Michael Shannon and Tova Stewart who plays her daughter, communicates in all levels with the audience through its subtle tone that it stays true to, till the last frame. The writing is strong and powerful and is aware of its character's range and properties that it uses it wisely and projects the best possible outcome at its most intense dramatic scene that stays with the audience even after leaving the screen. It is short on technical aspects like sound department, although it is shot beautifully with amazing camera work and perfect editing. Jeff Nichols; the writer-director, surpasses its thought-provoking script through his brilliant execution skills which speaks volume in here. The performance objective is satisfied utterly by the brilliant cast like Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain and a delightful young talented actress named Tova Stewart. Despite of its grounded nature script, there are few fictionalized or fantasized sequences installed so perfectly that it leaves the audience in the awe of it. Take Shelter is overprotective and immensely secured of its character's perspective that helps fuel this character driven feature into reaching a far fetched idea.… Expand

I found this to be quite a tense movie, one in which I felt I shared the lead characters confusion, in terms of trying to understand why what seemed to be going to happen, was going to happen.

There's a strong sense of paranoia present inI found this to be quite a tense movie, one in which I felt I shared the lead characters confusion, in terms of trying to understand why what seemed to be going to happen, was going to happen.

There's a strong sense of paranoia present in this movie, as it becomes clear that others surrounding him aren't experiencing the distressing things he is. I noted that there wasn't narration provided, so as a viewer we're having to guess what he's thinking while he's dealing with the distress he's experiencing. Plot wise, this movie is quite a 'slow burner' (I think thats the term?), although there are certainly moments in which sudden things happen and indeed your likely to jump, unexpected events come out of the blue, much like what you expect from a horror movie, only there's less in the way of particularly graphic violence - really its the themes that are alot more disturbing or scary, than the majority of whats shown visually on screen. To me, this seemed quite a classic style of thriller, with the personal background details only very slowly coming to light, the sense of paranoia and general claustrophobia felt throughout and also the fact that the main character is slowly distanced from their nearest and dearest, although he believes he's actually protecting them, when in reality his seemingly distant and irrational behaviour is worrying/scaring them. I found the actor who played Curtis, Michael Shannon, did physically come across as seeming quite sinister, with at times confused and other times determined looking eyes I suppose - its hard to explain that sort of thing but thats what came to mind. His actions seem more and more irrational as the movie continues, irrational, that is, to his partner and others who aren't aware of his visions but that to us, as viewers, would seem fairly logical, if you believed your dreams (or more, nightmares) were going to become reality.

For once, I wasn't overly keen on the use of the musical score in this movie, as I felt it seemed a bit over the top, or over relied on, in this instance. This movie mainly relies on subtle elements to bring about, or heighten the tense atmosphere - the slow, 'drifty' type of camera work used at times and the noise of weather from outside (pouring rain etc.), things like that. I found that some of the effects, in terms of CGI and visual effects in the more sinister scenes, were about average I suppose - its really what it symbolised that was quite creepy and worked well but as far as the actual way its shown on screen, again I felt there was something slightly lacking there - it didn't look quite as, I suppose genuine, as maybe it could have? although it does feel perhaps a little harsh of me to say that but I remember thinking that as I watched it. I certainly wouldn't say any of the issues I mention really spoilt the movie for me at all - i found myself really quite intrigued to discover what would happen to Curtis and his family, what the final outcome would be. I guess you could say this movie highlights the sense of isolation people with such issues must face and this is even more acutely the case given his child is deaf and him and his wife are shown being taught to communicate via ASL (presumably American Sign Language, I know BSL as an abbrevation stands for British Sign Language, which would obviously be our equivalent).

Content wise, this movie features some strong language and moderate violence in parts - some scenes may make you jump but its the themes in general that are more sinister overall. Obviously this isn't the sort of movie that children or younger people would be likely to understand fully, it would be quite scary to young children, so its not surprising that it carries a 15 rating.

Back to the plot and I found the climax of the plot, as it were (towards the end) to be really tense and dramatic and I felt that worked well overall, I was pretty much glued to the seat, waiting to see what Curtis' reaction was going to be at the critical moment - although the absolute final ending may disappoint some but I suppose in a way I should have seen that coming. In any instance, it didn't ruin my general enjoyment of the movie.

I think overall, this movie does well in highlighting some sensitive issues and also in being quite an engrossing story, with pretty interesting characters. I felt it was quite symbolic (if that makes any sense) and despite a few negative points already mentioned, I thought it was quite a decent watch as a mystery thriller.… Expand
