In the vast canon of King-derived movies, “Tower” belongs in the upper ranks.
The direction is fairly formulaic, the special effects are nothing special, and except for Elba and McConaughey, who square off against each other in a series of ho-hum set pieces, the cast is forgettable. So is the movie.

I absolutely loved it. I may be a bit cramped, but the actor play is fantastic, the actors are all cool and play their role wonderfully, action sequences are all how i imagine them to be - dynamic, short and with a couple of tide turns. I really hope to see the sequels.

Bringing the action of future Dark Tower novels forward isn’t a sin. The sin is not having nearly enough space for it. The film is breathless in all the worst ways as a result.
Director Nikolaj Arcel blends dystopian weirdness and temporal hellbeasts until all that remains is an emulsified, grey gunk, which is then forced down our throats for 95 minutes. Flavor gone, identifiers eviscerated.
King’s Dark Tower universe is rich with cultural reference points and is always totally unpredictable, but in cutting it down to consolidate its highlights, The Dark Tower can’t even shoot the most necessary bullets straight.
This unholy mess shouldn't happen to a King, much less a paying customer.
With fantasy material like this, we need to be made to believe in the inventions and the conceits, and we cannot do that if they are shot and staged in such a truncated and perfunctory way.
Je découvre lors du générique de fin que le film est une adaptation des nouvelles de Stephen King... les bras m'en tombent quelque peu, car je croyais qu'il s'agissait d'une production Disney. Ou en tout cas d'une histoire pour les mômes !
Alors la gentille tour sombre, le "dernier" pistolero (!?) protecteur et des enfants qui pensent "très fort" utilisés par les forces des ténèbres... j'ignorais que Stephen avait écrit euh... des trucs pareils. Cela donne envie de rigoler mais le film demeure assez bien fait surtout pour l'opposition entre le vilain diable très méchant et le "pistolero" désabusé (mais très vindicatif).
Elba est un acteur remarquable et très sympathique, rien de surprenant mais McConaughey (note : j'ai fait un copié-collé pour écrire le nom du bellâtre suranné, sinon j'y arrive jamais) MacCo donc est étonnant dans le rôle du diable : cynique à souhait, cruel et un brin ricaneur sous cape... le genre de méchant qu'on aime d'emblée. Comme quoi, même un tocard peut gagner le tiercé dans des conditions idéales (pour lui !).
Quoi qu'il en soit, la mise en scène est assez agréable, les effets sont réussis et la guimauve n'est pas trop envahissante. Un très honnête divertissement donc même si on a un mal fou à croire à toutes ces conneries que le scénario enfile comme des perles...

With a source material as epic as The Dark Tower books this movie can be summed up in one word.
Disappointing.
This is exactly the opposite of how these books should have been translated to a movie should. The script is an abortion, its nonsensical, it slightly touches on plot points and characters from the novels.
I know its supposed to be "like a sequel" but god its just so awful.

It was not bad as I thought, but I still don't this film. I'm not even sure if the director has read the books. The Dark Tower was one of my favorite series and I was hoping to see the next film if the film went well, but whatever.
