The Devil All The Time is a lovingly-constructed quilt of interlocking insanity, about how the simple life is anything but simple and salt-of-the-earth folk are every bit as screwed up as debauched debutantes. You want to reminisce about the good ol’ days, kid? Well then, let’s peel away the postcard facade. The Devil All The Time is a masterpiece of dark Americana.
I did not expect to even like this film, much less find it near-perfect. But despite its bleakness, it does treat its themes seriously and responsibly. It's a hard watch, but worth the time.
This time the critics really do have their heads up their asses. The movie is spellbinding from first scene to last. It's a period movie with all the beautiful cars and buses from the 40s and Main St. just like it was. All the acting is superb as is the cinematography and directions. The suspense is wonderful.
Make a note of the critics who panned this and ignore them in the future.
You can reject the conclusions of Campos’ movie, particularly its unrelenting pileup of dead bodies, and still take pleasure in its atmospheric surface — in the persuasiveness of its small-town environs (shot on 35-millimeter film by the gifted cinematographer Lol Crawley) and the vigor of its performances. He may not persuade you all the time, but the devil is very much in those details.
Even with Spider-man Tom Holland and new Batman Robert Pattinson in the leads, this violent tale of backwoods sin and corruption suffers from a severe case of too-muchness.
Every moment in The Devil All the Time is meant to be a galvanic, preachifying high point, and so the characters aren’t allowed to reveal themselves apart from the dictates of the plot. One can scarcely imagine a duller lot of sacrificial lambs.
Great movie and amazing performances all across but I must say that Holland and Pattinson steal the show. Spider-Man fans are going to be pleasantly surprised by how good Tom Holland is and I'm excited to see more of his dramatic performances later in his career. I was afraid that these connected stories might feel forced but it that's not the case. I think the overall story flows smoothly.
This movie REALLY wants a moral core, while packing as many lurid threads as it can. So the film inexplicably brings a homespun narrator to guide us through the story. Production design & soundtrack are assets, but can’t steer the lack of character relationship development. Some really lovely performances, especially Bill Skarsgard. Other performances are less richly developed, and chewing tobacco should get its own credit.
O voice-over quebrou minha imersão no filme várias vezes.
A well shot film with great acting, but it's not enough. The film left me depressed, failing to deliver sense or meaning beyond the plain surface level takeaway. I judge films by how much I could recommend them, and how much fun I had watching them. I can't recommend this movie, and while I enjoyed the performances, I don't relish in the visual portrayal of "evil exists". The narrative just meandered from here to there until the credits. Blah.
