The art-heist plot is pretty by-the-numbers, but Travolta nearly saves it with his doomed air of paternal helplessness. He makes you feel the weight of being at the mercy of forces bigger than oneself. At 61, he still possesses something rare, even in rote material like this.
The Forger wants to be many things: gritty crime thriller, heist picture, domestic drama. Family bonds get “forged,” too, right? Director Philip Martin, who’s mainly done British TV work, is best known for “Prime Suspect 7.” Martin keeps things moving a little too briskly, perhaps. Scenes generally feel underdeveloped, and transitions abrupt.

My wife and I almost didn't watch it because of some of the reviews. I don't get it. We both really enjoyed it. Maybe it had something some current audiences are not used to - acting instead of lots of things blowing up and computer generated special effects. The characters were real.
It was fascinating to watch Travolta trudge through life rather than strut - a man weighed down with his problems. But under the oppression you can still detect the strut.
I liked the way violence was shown at at distance or not overly drawn out. The director was not trying **** you into Jerry Springer sensationalism but just show it as a part of his character's life - not too important or unimportant. The story and characters were more important.

Even with a terminally ill teenage son character, a pill-popping absentee mother and a crotchety grandpa character, The Forger is consistently ineffective as a sentimental tearjerker — and an even bigger failure as a heist movie.
A sluggish, obvious fusion of a disease-of-the-week tearjerker with a comedic family crime romp that abounds in stiflingly over-emphasized Boston-crime-movie details.
Preposterousness is not necessarily a vice, and plausibility is a weak virtue. Just ask Alfred Hitchcock. So to say that the conceits of The Forger (directed by Philip Martin) are ridiculous isn’t really saying much. It’s also dull, incoherent and drab to look at.
Occasionally a movie comes along that’s such an awkward compilation of ideas it fascinates: The Forger, a Boston-set melodrama involving cancer, Impressionist art and deadbeat dads, is only about half that good.
Travolta’s face looks immobile, while Plummer and Jennifer Ehle, as Cutter’s estranged, strung-out wife, look out of place. Sheridan (“The Tree of Life”), though, does seems comfortable in a movie where the colors blur sloppily.
The movie "The Forger" is a well enacted drama, with different aspects than seen in other movies. It connects a loving father, his ill son and a robbery of an artwork at a museum. The movie is suspenseful and not foreseeable.

In the past John Travolta has not led himself into a good acting career, example of movies he flunked 'In Paris with love' or Killing Season, The Forger is a well acted film but that's not the case! it's the story that 's the problem. How could a film starring John Travolta be that boring? Travolta tries but what happen to the guy that's was kick ass in 'Pulp Fiction'? that's something i like to know. The film is about An art forger (John Travolta) arranges an early release from prison so that he can spend time with his dying son, then must pull off one final job for the man who made his freedom possible. It's like a cheesy opera that has moments. Grade C-
