While the result is not flawless, this is a polished, impressive attempt that pays off in the end. It may take awhile to get there, but its themes of loss, longing, heartache and betrayal, not to mention the nature and value of beautiful objects, do ultimately move us.
It’s neither a rousing success nor an embarrassing failure, falling somewhere in between, closer to admirable attempt.

This movie is so beautiful, the acting and the scenes are amazing. The characters feel genuine and the emotions in this movie are so AHHHHHHHH ️ 10/10 definitely recommend

The Goldfinch is both too long and too short; dull to watch but scanty on the details about logistics, character, and just how anything of note actually occurs. The mystery of the film is something to be endured, rather than solved. But the real mystery is our leading man. We never know who Theo is as an adult, or if we’re on his side, or why we should care.
The Goldfinch, the novel, was a testament to the power of The Goldfinch, the painting – but The Goldfinch, the movie, can’t be more than a footnote to the mysteries and the grace of the works that inspired it.
The Goldfinch has a painting at its center, but despite a classy palette of ingredients conjures a lifeless, disjointed picture. Adapted from a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the movie represents a transparent bid to bring the book's prestige to the screen, but it's another case of literary underpinnings being lost in translation.
The big problem with The Goldfinch — a lifeless film that doesn’t consist of scenes so much as it does an awkward jumble of other, smaller problems stacked on top of each other like kids inside a trench coat — is that it mistakes its source material for a great work of art.
The only achievement in transferring The Goldfinch from page to screen is that it’s a botch job for the ages.
Sometimes you come upon a screenwriter who tries to throw too many twists & turns into a story. I felt this way as I tried to follow this film. I see some found this film worthy of a 10 rating but I hardly agree. It's watchable but I could have easily waited for a DVD release

No wonder Donna Tartt dropped her agent after this thing came out. A classic example of Hollywood rushing into the wake of an acclaimed novel, snatching up the rights and hatcheting it death. First off, this is a damn near 800-page novel we're talking about. You're already going to be pushing the capability of the feature length medium to the proverbial limit here. The deftest hands in the world would've needed to be in charge of this adaptation in order for things to turn out even moderately coherent. Instead, we get a non-linear interpretation of things, ultimately sacrificing the sense of scope that the novel was so unequivocally known for. Couple that with a stilted interpretation of the author's unique voice and some listless performances and you get one of the more disappointing book-to-film attempts I've seen in recent memory.

Already "Brooklyn" (2015) was an elaboration of grief for the passage of the protagonist to a new spacetime reality: transoceanic and adult. With "The Goldfinch" Crowley replicates the story with the same affectation and surrender: "the five stages of grief are shown through the peculiar locations where the film navigates: the impenetrability of New York is the denial, the aridity of the Las Vegas desert the anger, the distant London the bargaining, the criminality of Amsterdam the depression and again New York which, with the antique shop becomes a safe house, for final acceptance"; "narrative discontinuity is the chaos of life." Radiohead contribute to the bleak outcome.

Excruciatingly boring. Most of the film's characters are unnapealing and dull. The dialogue is sloppy and awkward for most of the film. The interactions with young Boris and Theo are the only scenes that feel genuine and interesting. This film was a waste of 2 hours and 20 minutes of my life
