The movie offers more than a blockbuster spirit. It gives unpredictable humor and scares that differs from those western movies. In the end, I strongly recommend you to watch this. You won't regret.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is often difficult to identify with foreign films as we don't "get" the inside stuff. This film was done throughout the 1950's on small budgets. Yet there were believable monsters or forces and the characters dealt with them almost the way we think we would have. There also were many "monster" films that spent no attention to detail, poorly developed characters, inept dialogue, and maybe a political statement or some pathos thrown in. We have the latter here.
The acting is at times silly and then serious. Why does the monster kidnap people? A snack later? And the bad government including the U.S. made to look inept. If the film takes place in the present there is technology that could have easily found the monster and destroyed it. Oh yeah, couldn't because of the virus.
Why critics have chosen to heap praise on this is beyond my understanding. It seems like the makers of the film tried but it just doesn't play to American sensibilities. I fast forwarded through most of it. Not impressed with the monster or the humans. But maybe that's just my American perspective. It got raves in Korea. For these reasons I rate it a U for unratable or maybe unwatchable. You want to see a good foreign monster movie, try Big Man Japan.… Expand

Wow, this movie is overrated. Movies that make no sense are not enjoyable. Even fantasy/sci-fi movies must play by their own rules, and this one definitely does not. Why does chemical gas only affect people who are not crucial to the plot? Why is it that a full-frontal lobotomy does absolutely nothing to a person's brain function? (well, you guessed it... he's crucial to the plot.) The creature effects are kinda cool, but the creature doesn't seem to have any definition, we're not really sure about anything about this creature except for that it only eats/kills people half of the time, and it is really quiet (even though it's huge, it can sneak up on people without making a sound). I didn't even mention the terrible translations in the subtitles. "He's always B-minus, not A-positive! Don't give him a hard time!" WTH? This movie had some potential, but it's a senseless, frustrating mess with way too many holes. Avoid, avoid, avoid.… Expand

Wow i really was expecting such a great monster movie with plenty of scares and good effects and acting, or at least that's what all of the movie critics were saying. So when i saw this movie at blockbuster, i decided "why not? everyone says its a good movie" so i rented it, little did i know that i was being lured into the biggest crap-fest that i have ever seen in my life. For starters, the plot really made no sense at all, I mean, why would toxic acid turn a fish into a giant monster?, and if so, then how come only ONE fish was affected by the acid, when there's at least a couple hundred fish in the lake. Secondly, the acting was laughable and couldn't fool a four year old, and quite frankly, neither could the "monster". Lastly, the dubbing, I really hated how this was a Korean movie and was meant to STAY in Korea but some idiot decided to translate it to English so they could bring this garbage film over to America, and the dubbing sucked so bad, i ,mean when the people were done talking , their mouths were still moving. this movie sucked, bottom line, and if you want to see a GOOD monster film then i recommend "the mist"… Expand

Sadly, for the majority of the film, I was just bored. If you want to make a funy scary movie, try the Slither script, or Evil Dead, etc. This one really missed the mark.

It seems like low-budget sci-fi, except for the animatronics of the creature. A few points are really funny, but there are lots of inconsistencies, such as the creature's lair being full of bodies on one scene, then empty the next. Arguably, the monster's appearance arrives too early in the film, but its descent from the bridge and splash is awe-inspiring and will lead an audience to silence. "The Host" doesn't truly begin until the oldest son loses his childish persona and comes of age. His daughter is held hostage in a sewer(at least King Kong wasn't a pedophile), and it's here "The Host" starts to work. The monster does something that belongs in the annals of grossness. Now we're a little scared. This creature stops being a CGI effect and is transformed into something on par with Gollum, a fictive body that seems to be living and breathing on its own terms. But what's truly striking about "The Host" is the film's willingness to kill off major characters. Apparenly, who dies in a South Korean event film is less predictable. And unlike many American event films, the final showdown against the menace is intricate and exciting.… Expand

Nothing about this movie worked, from the monster (wasn't scary or engaging in any way), to the humor (I hesitate to call it that, none of it was funny), to the narrative of the Just a horrible piece of 'film making'. I have been coming to this site for years and have never posted. But after watching this, I had no choice. This movie is not good. I don't understand the good reviews this is getting. It didn't work at all for me. I didn't find it scary, tense, or suspenseful, nor was it funny at those times that it is trying to be. This is proof that critics have no idea what they are talking about. I couldn't even finish the movie it was so sad. Then The Invasion gets bad reviews, that movie was awesome. Stay away from this movie.

The acting is all over the place - take one instance when the family is mourning over the loss of the little girl (the hinging factor of the movie), and all of the actors transition instantly from mourning to just plain silliness, making the entire sequence ineffective. The monster itself, as awesome as it looks, doesn't even feel like a threat most of the time, which is a result of both bad writing and bad sound editing - bad writing because the entire city doesn't seem to worry about a colossal river creature eating and stealing humans, and bad sound editing because every time an action sequence begins, the volume of the soundtrack and effects drop significantly, which really kills the intensity of those moments.… Expand

En effet, le réalisateur a compris le véritable sens de ce genre de long-métrage, à savoir, critiquer à travers quelque chose de divertissant pour le jeune public. Et des enjeux politiques sur la Corée du Sud par rapport à la présence des troupes américaines, il y en a! Mais le problème, c'est que The Host n'a rien d'un divertissement quelconque. De ce fait, il fait fuir les adeptes du genre (souvent des adolescents) à cause de sa mise en scène vraiment spéciale et de sa bande son inadéquate. Reste des effets numériques plutôt satisfaisants pour un tel film (11 millions de dollars de budget) et des acteurs pas si mauvais. Mais à jouer avec la mise en scène en nous faisant oublier qu'il s'agit d'un film de monstre, le réalisateur perd franchement de son public. L'ennuie ne pointe pas le bout de son nez. One of the worst films I have ever seen. Not believable or thrilling in the least. The acting is so bad that it nixes the possibility of any suspension of disbelief. The film has no consistent tone and the characters are utterly ridiculous.

Opinión:

Bueno, acabo de ver esta película junto a mi madre para romper un poco el hielo y tensión de los últimos días, nos pareció muy entretenida, mezcla de manera muy inteligente el terror, el humor y el drama, quizás el único defecto que no nos gustó fue que la criatura se veía espantosamente mala en el mal sentido de la palabra, no sólo por el renderizado y los efectos especiales que incluso para la época no envejecieron bien, sino que su aspecto es demasiado fantástico que de vez en cuando desentona el ambiente de la película, es como si Guillermo del Toro hubiese metido mano en el diseño de la criatura, y no es que no me guste Del Toro, sino que su estilo de cuentos de miedo parece estar presente por aquí, pero bueno, la dirección y actuaciones son impecables al igual que la fotografía.

Upon viewing "The Host" trailer, and with vivid memories of how silly and loveable "Kung Fu Hustle" was, I became thoroughly excited about the potential for yet another clever and funny Asian movie. Then once I read the movie critics' praises for "The Host" I was certain that I was in store for a silly bagful of thrills, laughs, and scares all wrapped up in a thoroughly enjoyable Asian monster movie. Unfortunately the movie does not live up to its billing. To have compared this movie to "Jaws", as one critic did, is a total and misleading overreaction. "The Host" has a couple of thrilling moments, but it isn't thrilling. It has a few funny moments, but it isn't a funny. And it has a few scary moments, but the it just isn't scary. I'll have to admit that the movie had me on the edge of my seat, but that was only because I was anxious to leave. Perhaps it was the political satire that was so appealing to those that loved this movie. Maybe that's the answer. If you're looking for political satire, then you too may love "The Host". However, if you're expecting a truly funny, thrilling, and scary movie, I think you'll be disappointed.… Expand

one of the best monster movies i have ever seen. everyone has no idea how great it is. like it has great story and plot and it makes sense. and the somewhat funny parts help the movie it is great.

Whoa, why the bad ratings from the viewers? You have to understand some Korean culture to fully understand this film; a lot of the jokes are dipped with subtle satire, and not a single scene is wasted, all have meanings that build up to the end.

It is something completely different. It is one of the best 'monster movies,' if not the best, that I have ever seen. It is full of drama and darkish humor. It develops the characters extremely well, even succeeding in giving the monster personality. The struggles that the characters go through are real and do not seem to be fabricated for cinematic effect (besides the monster) and therefore do not leave you with any unanswered questions or loose ends. It is intense, although it is able to calm itself down in times of character development and more intellectual interaction between the characters. It involves much more than the standard Man Vs. Monster theme as seen in so many other movies of its kind. The only gripe I would have with this movie would be the very beginning because it makes it slightly corny. But, nonetheless, you forget about that and any questions of why there is a 50 ft fish going around and eating people are eliminated. The presence of the monster becomes noticeable on a perfect scale as the story progresses. It does an excellent job of showing societal reaction to the monster and makes sure that the magnitude of the public and government reaction is not allowed to go out of control save for maybe some over-the-top government action (but, hey, its Korea). All in all, I'd say that this movie is fast-paced when it needs to be, but also allows itself to have emotional and heartfelt themes.… Expand

Two days ago I saw "300", yesterday I saw "The Host"... which one did I like the best? The Host, and judging from the audience reactions... I was not alone. I don't know how people could like this. I must say I give this movie 3, and thats only for the animated monster. Well done. A 1 or 0 is way too harsh. Everything worked in this movie, except the most important thing for a monster movie: horror. The movie wasn't scary at all. Not counting that, it was fun, well acted, and an overall well balanced movie.

It becomes a different movie, almost literally--and a far superior one. Some of the dialogue is so different between the dubbed and the subtitled English, you can't believe it's coming from the same source. What seems clownish in the dub becomes effective and even stirring when the original dialogue is playing. Whatever you do, don't watch this dubbed; the film's dark humor and queasy tonal shifts make it suffer even worse than most from the process.… Expand

The numerous themes are incredibly relevant (though the whole American ignorance thing might offend some people, even though the guy trying to be a hero and the jerk scientist were hilarious). Monster movies never get respect come award season, but this flick has scored higher than almost all other foreign films, so why not atleast nominate it? I must say when I started watching this movie I was unsure as to wether it would be that good. After sitting through the entire movie I can truly say that if your a horror/monster movie fan you will not be disapointed in this movie. In reading through the viewer reviews one might notice the disparity between all 10s or all 0s and 1s. there is a reason (my only guess is that all of the 10s must be Korean culture majors and have never seen a scary movie in their lives). Scary? not in the least, not even remotely suspenseful. Boring? yes! and tedious.. Both my girlfriend and I fell asleep, and thinking we might have missed something good, promptly rewound it (we didn't miss a thing). Funny? unless your'e korean, find slap-stick funny, or know the inside scoop on the subtle complexities of korean humor, NO! The movie's only redeeming moments are the credits, when you realise it is finally over! do not be fooled be fooled by all the great reviews.… Expand

As is the case with all truly great monster films, the narrative isn't about the monster at all, not really, it only serves as a device to move the story along. Also, the creature itself does not present the real threat to our heroes, rather it stands in for a greater evil of society, in this case, the corruption of the Korean government and state-run institutions and the morally questionable invasive interference by the USA in Korean affairs. Writer/director Bong Joon-ho has not only created a smart and entertaining thriller, but a tender family drama and a rip-roaring comedy. The hilariously dysfunctional Park family are all great characters, and you can really empathise with their plight as they frantically search for their youngest, Hyun-seo (Ko Ah-seong) who has been taken by the monster. Son Kang-ho as always makes a compelling central protagonist, and makes the perpetually napping failure Gang-doo a comical but incredibly sympathetic character, and he is reunited with fellow regular Bong Joon-ho collaborators Byeon Hee-bong, Park Hae-il and Bae Doona playing the rest of the constantly bickering Park family. Their squabbles and ever-increasing desperation in failing to find Hyun-seo, though undeniably poignant, also provide plenty of opportunity for humour. Bong is a true master of black comedy, extremely skilled at getting a laugh out of the most unexpected situation - take, for instance the scene where the Parks gather around the shrine for the dead and missing post-monster attack. In most films, this scene would be a solemn one, but here Bong uses the family's extreme reaction to their plight, the unanimous blame of Gang-doo for the accidental loss of his daughter, and the insults the family trade with each other for their various shortcomings to provide the funniest moment of the film. It's a perfect balance of tone, of the dark and the light, of tragedy and comedy as the Park family clumsily grapple with each other in their hysteria and collapse, wailing on the floor in a heap. The more restrained, emotionally sensitive moments in the film are handled no less skillfully (particularly the lip-wobbling moment when the family patriarch Hee-bong finally opens up to his children and confesses how much he truly cares for his eldest son Gang-doo while said son is apparently fast asleep) and the action is thrilling, with the CGI holding up remarkably well considering the film's modest budget. Bong Joon-ho continually pushes boundaries and challenges filmmaking conventions, but never loses sight of what really matters - character, story and entertainment. You'd have to be a complete moron to dismiss The Host as just another dumb creature feature. It's incredibly intelligent, political, and despite its sci-fi trappings, it is grounded in believable human experience. Most directors, if they're lucky, will produce a single masterpiece in their career. Bong Joon-ho has thus-far only directed four feature films, and two of those - Memories of Murder and The Host, in my humble opinion, are masterpieces.… Expand

The Host is thrilling and scary for what is it going to do. Well what the monster is going to do to the place. O-O Amazing and Enjoyable The Host is the perfect thrilling pondering movie of intense.

Terrific film that succeeds on many levels; to judge it purely on its merits as a 'horror movie' or 'monter movie' would be to miss the point entirely. What sets 'the Host' apart from other films of its type (or any Hollywood film for that matter) is the rather idiosyncratic, oddball family presented to the viewer and the way it deftly incorporates dark humour and (credible) tenderness into proceedings. The scenes featuring the 'monster' don't disappoint, but the interstitial scenes not featuring the voracious, squid-like monstrosity (and there's a lot of them) are among the best moments in the film. The performances are spot-on, and the script is insightful, and oftentimes witty. 'The Host' is a film with an important underlying social commentary; a family drama pitched as a monster movie whose mishmash of ideas and genres make the film consistently engaging.… Expand
