Such an original gem. I watch every Halloween. It's found footage so if you can get over that, it's a real first person treat into the world of haunted houses.

This is a really strange film for me because I don't know if I really liked this movie or not. The Houses October Built is a found footage film about a group of friends who journey around the country to find the most extreme haunt in America, and when they think they've found the most extreme, it seems like the haunt has found them... I guess? I'm still confused if this movie is supposed to be supernatural or just about a bunch of crazy rednecks, but it was rather difficult to follow this movie. The pacing was horrible, and there were a lot of scenes that seemed creepy but never really contribute to the story as a whole. The first half of the film is reasonably atmospheric and unsettling until the gags wear off and become nonsensical and irrelevant. The final ten minutes in particular are just basically seeing the characters running through the haunt, and the ending was very disappointing. The movie built it up to be something much darker and crueler than it actually was. The cast worked very well together, and it did pique my interest in extreme haunts. Other than the atmosphere and characters, The Houses October Built was sort of a let down.

If you’re relatively easily scared or are in a theater full of people who are, the film might be good for a few screams. But only if you’re the patient sort. It takes almost an hour to get to the good stuff.

The filmmakers attempt to inject some life into their dubiously thin narrative by incorporating sequences shot at actual haunted houses that favor more elaborate shock tactics.

Sometimes I think I have to congratulate myself for going on and on with horror films when in the end 99% of them are disappointments. And I always watch them with hope, the hope of finding something good but this year has been terrible for the genre, I've seen so many bad films that it's astonishing. The Houses October Built does not enter the category of worthless but it doesn't really offers anything to stay until the end either, it's generic to the bone and you need patience while watching it because there isn't really much scares. I heard a sequel was just released but it doesn't surprise me, cheap horror always get sequels.

The film started quite well but lost its way - by the end you will be confused, disappointed and annoyed. Adequate acting for a found footage horror movie but few real scares and not disgusting enough for the modern horror fan.
