The Incomparable Rose Hartman is a gorgeously shot, sharply edited portrait of photographer Hartman.
Pushy, judgmental, tart-tongued and self-obsessed, the photographer at the heart of Otis Mass’s penetrating documentary, The Incomparable Rose Hartman, is, like her snapshots, a piece of work.
The Incomparable Rose Hartman doesn’t quite make the case for lengthily profiling its irascible and not particularly interesting subject.
If you share Hartman’s trifecta of obsessions — photography, fashion and fame — you’ll find plenty to appreciate.
The movie is most interesting when addressing how important belonging in the world she covers is to Hartman as her recording it, and there’s obviously a hard-bitten, self-obsessed personality to explore, but it’s lost in the surface-skim technique.
