The picture could easily have slipped into pure melodrama, but the blend of comedy, sophistication and political intrigue, as well as excellent character development, puts it in a class by itself. [25 Nov 2007, p.N36]
This is one of Hitchcock's finest British films, a classic mystery that manages to combine humor with a genuine sense of menace--not to mention the kinds of characters that everyone dreams of meeting on a Central European train journey.
It's typical Hitchcock: taut, morbid, stylish, and determined to confound expectations all the way up to the final shot.
If it were not so brilliant a melodrama, we should class it as a brilliant comedy.
The more secure the audience feels, the more susceptible they are to the horrors of disruption Hitchcock will visit upon them later in the film.
In less skilled hands, the film’s slow start would be a problem. Thanks to thrilling visuals and an effortless performance by Redgrave, Lady Vanishes is a lively companion piece to Hitchcock’s other magnificent British-made hit, The 39 Steps, about an innocent man mistaken for a spy.
