The multiplexes are full of films that promise little more than a forgettable good time. The Man Who Knew Infinity is just as entertaining, but far more substantial.
Math buffs will appreciate the inclusion of a brief and witty anecdote they may already know involving Ramanujan and the number 1,729. Well done.

Unfortunately, the film is nowhere near as innovative as its subject.
Mr. Irons handily hits the emotional beats, as does Mr. Patel.
When one of the most enlightening moments of a film comes during the postscript (black holes!), you know there’s a problem – one that has nothing to do with math.
In the end, The Man Who Knew Infinity never allows itself to transcend the sad irony of such biopics — that people known for thinking outside the box are always given film portraits that refuse to do so.
If The Man Who Knew Infinity had been more concerned with the soul of a raw talent instead of the learn-and-earn ethos of so much accomplishment cinema, it might have produced something soulful rather than something institutional.
More movies about scientists! I've been "introduced" to Ramanujan some 25 years ago and immediately fell in love with the story and unique character. 25 years later I have the opportunity to rediscover Ramanujan's story once again, this time on screen.
Note: I haven't yet seen the movie, am going to on Friday, at the moment can't comment on the movie itself, I'm just excited someone made a movie about one of the great mathematicians of all time.

The movie stars a fantastic cast with Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons and they shine brighter than the actual film. I thought the movie was still solid but the movie lacked heart and excitement that would of really pushed the movie to the next level. Overall you will have a enjoyable time with the movie but the standouts are definitely the lead roles. Especially Dev who is phenomenal.

Dev Patel stars as a math genius who travels from his humble home in India to work with his mentor at Cambridge (Jeremy Irons). This true story is worth telling, but the film is relentlessly bleak. He struggles to overcome racism, the scorn of other academics and separation from his wife, but some brightness would have added much-needed contrast. Patel does a commendable job in his most demanding role to date. Irons is also fine. It's just that the dismal suffering dominates the film and, despite some career success and ultimately respect, it's an endlessly dreary biography.
