It’s a sharply honed, darkly funny, ultra-violent and wildly entertaining late 1960s period piece about the making of future made man Tony Soprano, the early criminal escapades of many key characters from the HBO series — and the blood oaths and ruthless betrayals that would set the checkered table for virtually everything that would happen to the Sopranos, their extended family and their associates some three decades later.
The film has a sneaky momentum.

Great movie. Only complaint is I wanted it to be longer. Seems it had a lot of elements to open up a series and this felt more like a two hour two episode premiere to a limited or regular series.

The Many Saints of Newark is smart enough to point out that Livia isn't an anomaly in this world — she's just another borderline-sociopath who has found her place among murderous men.
Although The Many Saints of Newark offers an alluring glimpse into Tony Soprano’s birth under a bad sign, it never shows the blue moon in the mobster’s eyes.
It’s undeniably entertaining stuff, but this choppy collage-style portrait of the formative figures in the life of the young Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini) is better suited to the needs of existing fans rather than those of Sopranos neophytes.
Chase, who co-wrote the script with an alum of his writers’ room, Lawrence Konner, flattens the world of The Sopranos into a generic, vaguely Scorsesian crime epic. At times, the film suggests the shapelessness of a biopic, as though it were beholden to some historical record of facts and figures.
Even the pleasurable sight of Michael Gandolfini —son of the late James Gandolfini, who played Tony in that series—as young Tony was never going to make up for the complete absence, in this film, of anything remotely reflective of the tone and color of “The Sopranos.”’ Or of anything resembling a credible character or plot line.
Not much of a prequel, but seeing Michael Gandolfini in each scene broke my heart due to the uncanny resemblance to his late father.

I debated whether to give this flick a 6 or a 7 and I dislike joining the river of negativity but nothing in this two-hour excursion really did much for me. A lot of time seemed to be devoted to Harold McBrayer and his criminal gang and that was a problem for me because I signed up to watch about the American mafia, not their competition. Added to that I kept getting confused about who was who and if I hadn't read that a youthful Artie Bucco and Jackie Aprile and **** Bonpensiero were supposed to be in the show . . . I have no idea where they were. They could've been cut in post-production for all I know.
All in all, this was not an inspired film. Other reviewers say it lacks substance and a reason for being and probably they're right. Go ahead and try it, but don't expect much.

Pointless and gratuitous. Without its tenuous connection to the Sopranos series, this rambling and disappointing film would have sunk without a trace. If you enjoy the nostalgia guessing game of figuring out who is the youthful incarnation of your favorite character, you may have a hint of amusement. For anyone else, this hodgepodge of Jersey junior mafia cliches will be a couple of hours you'll never get back.
