The kind of film you feel you need to shower after seeing, it just might have been Fuller’s finest hour.
Innocence and corruption live together beneath the harmonious, hypocritical surface of an idyllic-seeming American town, and while that situation may seem familiar now, thanks to the films and TV shows Naked Kiss helped inspire—Blue Velvet comes immediately to mind—familiarity has dulled none of the film’s force.
In a Fuller film, you're never quite sure where you're going. Whether Fuller was an authentic artist may be open to debate, but it's impossible to deny he was a first-rate storyteller. [15 May 1998]
The Naked Kiss is a gut punch with the rhythm of a dream.
Its raw and violent subject is matched by its hectic style; the thin production values take a backseat to Fuller’s rich imagination.
It’s Sirk-on-a-shoestring, and twice as cynical.
Good Samuel Fuller programmer about a prostie trying the straight route, The Naked Kiss is primarily a vehicle for Constance Towers. Hooker angles and sex perversion plot windup are handled with care, alternating with handicapped children 'good works' theme.
