The true horror of The Other Side of the Door is that Maria, too, has kicked off a vicious cycle of unnatural destruction, as the movie makes clear in its hard-hitting final punchline.
A solid haunting-possession movie with good character work and unusual local colour, this works in a few surprises, sufficient scares and a nicely barbed punchline.

When the balance was broken between the two worlds!
Considering this filmmaker from the B movies, this is not a bad one, probably it may remain as his best work for sometime. Definitely not a great horror film either, yet the rating it has received is a very low. The title says everything, but there are other things in the narration to get engaged with. Obviously a bit slow, and patches between the scenes should have been developed better. But overall film was slightly above average if you welcome a blend between two different cultures and themes.
It was the tale of a western couple who settled in Mumbai, but the film opens with their plan to start a family and later it moves to six years forward. Now they're grieving with their son's death, especially the mother with a guilty feeling. Then she comes to know a place to make a contact her dead son and to say proper goodbye. But what follows is the supernatural chaos in the house and finding a way to fix everything is the remaining film to reveal.
The concept was really wonderful, but the film was designed to be not scary or maybe those parts were just a cliché. You know those dead guys in the make-ups try to scare you stuffs. The story wise, it is refreshing, but should have been added more to it to make further interesting. It was just a 90 minute film, yet feel somewhat lengthy. Actors were decent, the locations were okay, the production was much better and the overall film was acceptable kind. Except easily predictable scenes, not bad for a casual watch.

I wasn't aware of the existence of this until about a week and a half ago, but I guess it helps watching a movie without any expectations or bias. Although it's not groundbreaking horror, The Other Side of the Door is an still efficient ghost story. The film follows a couple, Maria and Michael, who live in harmony in India until a car accident kills their son, Oliver. Desperate for closure, Maria learns of a ritual where she can speak to her son one last time. She travels to an ancient temple where a mysterious door acts as a portal between the world of the living and the dead. Her only warning is to not open the door, but, in typical horror movie fashion, Maria opens the door. Oliver's soul is brought back to the world of the living, but something else is trying to reclaim his soul. In terms of scares, The Other Side of the Door is inconsistent at best. There are a couple of genuinely scary scenes, but there are a few more that just cop out on a jump scare. One really great and scary thing about the movie is the demon trying to reclaim Oliver's soul. It's creepy as hell and is reminiscent of Sadako or Kayako. Another thing that salvages the film and makes it watchable is its great story. Maria's story of depression and desperation gives the plot an emotional edge while the Hindu themes and symbolism make it unique for an American film. The movie had a similar vibe to The Grudge in that it used another country's culture to create a disturbing atmosphere for its characters. The ending is actually great and pretty shocking, too. It's not the best "American goes to a foreign country and s*** goes down" horror movie, but The Other Side of the Door is a decently scary ghost movie with a great story.

Effective performances by the principals are unable to surmount the movie’s many cliches, although the actors render them more endurable. A more evocative title for this Hindu Gothic might be: "Mommies Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things."
A few frights pay off, but most don’t. The performances are TV-series flat — designed for close-ups.
To her credit, Callies has an accessible presence and tries to provide more pathos and humanity than were supplied on the page, even as her character makes increasingly idiotic decisions in the name of parental love.
Mothers will do anything for their children, but this film’s simplistic brand of horror never makes that devotion compelling or frightening.
The filmmakers are more concerned with shock-cuts, loud bangs, and creating Indian characters that are either servants or monsters, than with pushing the genre forward into satisfyingly visceral or psychological territory.
I came across a porno spoof of this called "The Other Side of the ****". I highly recommend it. It's good stuff.
The Other Side of the Door is one of those horror movies that we get every year that's normally terrible or just not that good. It came no surprise to me that this movie wasn't good, because honestly who expected this to be good? probably someone out there.
The acting was flat, it wasn't scary or effective at all and the kid actors freaking ****, I mean I've seen better kid actors in better movies then this.

Pretty meh movie. Nothing special nor original about it, the plot is weak and messy, the performances are okay to bad and the scares are cheap and not earned.

A really slow moving film that was plauged with production time problems and release push backs, The Other Side of the Door is a generic horror movie at best.
The concept isn't bad, the acting isn't bad, I simply feel that the way they presented the story was rather dull.

Not much new or exciting about this haunting mess. So after just watching The Conjuring 2 I was still in a horror mind set. Unfortunately this film with its pointless jump scares and mediocre script failed to satisfy. D

there's really much originality in this film apart from the fact that these horror tropes have an indian twist based on hindu mythology. it relies way to hard on jump scares and horror clichés and has absolutely no idea what it wants to do with this plot which only works because the characters are really dumb and some very dumb moments as a result. it has some good cinematography but if i were you i'd skip it.
