Wilby's father and the neighbor's dog get all the credit, but younger viewers will delight at knowing who really performed the heroics.
There are a good many laughs on this simple premise and the script’s exploitation of them. The only time the film falters badly is in its choice of a gimmick to get the boy-who-turns-into-a-dog turned back, for good and all, into a boy.

Unhappily, Producer Walt Disney tells his shaggy-dog story so doggedly that he soon runs it into the pound.
It isn't good, but it's certainly mythic.
The picture races into a wild chase of a climax that is pure bunk.
