Nowadays it seems when European filmmakers want to make pictures in North America, it’s always some gritty backwoods blood-drenched drama or thriller. Same with young actors like the Fiennes fella wanting to play black-eyed scruffy snotty miscreants. Is this some wayward pursuit of a kind of authenticity? Because what it is, ultimately, no matter how much competence is brought to bear to such exercises, tiresome.
The Silencing is a decently exhilarating thriller movie, even if the twists in the story aren't always well-earned or well thought out.

Even in these pandemic times, when we all hunger for escapism, this long journey to a lame ending hardly fills the bill.

The Silencing is an adequately suspenseful mystery thriller, but it underutilises its own antagonist. Nevertheless, the plot twists and climax make it an interesting watch.

The Silencing, while depressing and gloomy overall, reveals an unfortunate story of a man in a small rural Midwest town dealing with a tragic past. The atmospheric tone of the naturalistic environment was great, but the plot was fairly weak. There are some suspenseful moments and unexpected events that slowly piece together the story to create minimal interest. Those events are poorly explained and leave the audience unsatisfied and disappointed.

Nikolaj and a fairly solid cast deliver a decent mystery-thriller that keeps it short, sweet and to the point. There is a bit of a pacing issue towards the middle of the film and I feel like they try a bit too much with the various plot threads and red herrings throughout but all in all, It's certainly watchable and worth checking out. Just don't expect to be blown away from it.
