Hirokazu Kore-eda makes his first film out of Japan, and it's just exactly what you would expect.

The Japanese director translates very well his style to occidental storytelling; still, there are some plotlines and scenes built in a very oriental tradition, like those involving the girl and another contemplative one, in which one of the actresses goes upstairs during filming and waves almost religiously.

'The Truth' reminded me of 'Clouds of Sils Maria' in a lot of ways. Catherine Deneuve kind of takes Juliette Binoche's role in that film, in which a famous actress contemplates her life and career amidst the rise of a younger artist, who, in turn, is chosen to play one of the roles she was known for.

The film may not be Kore-eda's best work, but it's nice to see the chemistry between all these great actors. Language, as you will see, was not a barrier for the Japanese director to manage this talent.
