Could pass for any serial killer movie except for some pertinent philosophizing about the nature of evil and the operations of the soul.
The fairly routine plot is made somewhat more interesting by the infusion of issues regarding morality and faith, but ultimately Three, for all its philosophizing, is little more than a standard serial-killer movie with pretensions.
The vile sadism of the Saw movies has been replaced by decorative references to Saint Augustine and Immanuel Kant, and there's a beautiful but brainy police profiler (Waddell) on hand to dispense a thick layer of psychobabble.
Indeed, you could argue that weighty questions about the nature of evil and the allure of sin figured more prominently in the similarly titled "Se7en," one of several other, better suspensers dimly echoed here.
Marc Blucas as the hunted seminary student Kevin Parson might as well be dead for all his charisma.
Suspenselessly directed by Robby Henson, Thr3e commits the eighth deadly sin - boredom.
A frustrating exercise in diverted expectations.
