For his part, director Stephen Daldry synthesizes the predominant beats of his film work, which has vacillated between feel-good awards bait (Billy Elliot) and feel-bad awards bait (The Hours, The Reader). Feel-good/feel-bad is Together to a T. It feels wonderful.
What begins as a chamber piece, directed by Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin from a screenplay by Dennis Kelly, becomes a full-fledged movie with a pair of marvelous performances at its claustrophobic center.

Every couple who’s been married for 5+ years needs to watch this. I love the blunt honesty of the things that we always “want to say” to each other but never do. James McAvoy is the best and he doesn’t disappoint in this movie.
It’s so true how you simply cannot have the sweet without the gut-punch-spit-in-your-face-wish-you-were-dead-BITTER. But oh does it make the sweet so absolutely exquisite. Be prepared to pay full attention. It’s all dialogue but it’s not monotonous. This movie is fast paced and perfectly short. They’re such a great pair they hold your attention no matter what they’re doing or saying.

As the UK enters lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, a dysfunctional couple (played by Sharon Horgan and James McAvoy) are forced to spend significantly more time with each other. In the process, they must face various family issues head on. Essentially, a two-fer, the film features utilizes direct address by the couple (both together and individually) with the audience. Overall, the lead performances are strong with a mix of humorous, insightful and moving moments. One's appreciation for the film will largely depend upon the viewers patience for the claustrophobic setting and a willingness to explore the subject matter.

As the pandemic is still raging at this moment, it's obviously too early to tell whether "Together" is one for the ages or another one from that time. It's alternately brilliant and amateurish—a four-star acting masterclass at its best and a two-star ripped-from-the-headlines botch at its worst. Split the difference and you'll arrive at something like a holistic consideration.
Only in fits and starts does Together capture the electricity of live performance.
Together may not be the best pandemic movie about a poison-tongued couple stuck in lockdown together, but it’s the first to recognize that rage is a necessary part of grieving what the pandemic has taken from us.
Together finds moments of real emotion between its main prickly pair, but it still makes one wish there weren't movies about COVID already.
Together’s dramaturgy perfectly, if unintentionally, underscores the suffocating nature of pandemic living.

"Together" is a filmed theater, while "Locked Down" (Liman 2021) is a movie with an unusual idea of cinema and couple relationship. The only point in favor of Daldry & Martin's very tedious television film is that they thematize an aspect that is more relevant than ever: the slaughter of the elderly, the gerontocide, the voluntary killing of older people during the pandemic. This massacre of civilians was carried out in our allegedly civilized Western world, the Prosecutor's Offices have initiated/opened I do not know how many investigations, mediatically buried by the war in Ukraine. Profit kills as much as bullets, bombs, missiles.
