Dudley Moore is the comic bubble beneath her solemn sultriness, and Unfaithfully Yours, though a slow starter, eventually works up a full head of comic steam. [05 Mar 1984, p.81]
Moore is right at home on the podium or behind the piano, and his comic invention results in a delightful performance.
Zieff & Co. give it a game, good-humored try, but I don't think they're in jeopardy of being celebrated as inspired farceurs. [14 Feb 1984, p.D8]
This version isn't a total dud, but it's a coarser piece of slapstick, and not at all memorable.
Unfaithfully Yours turns mildly manic in its last half-hour or so, but it's not enough to redeem that first hour, when Moore and Kinski go through familiar motions in search of something special. For too much of their movie, what they're looking for isn't there. [13 Feb 1984, p.C6]
Amiable but half-baked remake of what was anyway one of Preston Sturges' least satisfactory comedies.
There are a few sparkles of humor here, but this remake is an inferior product. Whereas Sturges played out his story with wit and flair, Howard Zieff's direction is flat and uninspired.
