Us is a true genre flick, polished to a fine degree, a pure distillation of the essence of horror cinema.
A vibrant, appealing screen presence, Nyong’o brings a tremendous range and depth of feeling to both characters, who she individualizes with such clarity and lapidary detail that they aren’t just distinct beings; they feel as if they were being inhabited by different actors.

Peele is this generation’s Hitchcock, for sure, but also a true American original with introspective themes in hand and suspense to spare.
Perhaps Us stumbles near the end while straining for an operatic, shattering finale that explains everything that preceded it but, after capturing the zeitgeist his first time out, Peele avoids the sophomore slump by methodically laying out his riveting tale.
Us is more expansive and messier, a Rorschach blot of a movie, riffing on primal fears and a raft of ’80s references. Is it a pointed cultural take or just a gleeful scare-fest? It depends on what you choose to take from it.
Terrifying...The less you know going in — and the less energy you spend thinking about it after the fact — the better the movie works, trading on some uncanny combination of Peele’s imagination and our own to suggest a horror infinitely larger and more insidious than the film is capable of representing.
It pains me to say this. I spent a good deal of Us straining to like it, to get on its slightly preening wavelength, to be nourished by its heady stew of tropes. I couldn’t get there, though. As loaded up on stuff as Us is, there’s not enough to grab onto; it’s an alienating idea piece that lumbers away just as it’s about to reveal its true nature.
This movie is incredible, it bothers me that people criticize it too much just because they weren't scared ... I mean, did they expect Jump Scares all the time or what?

Us. Me and my Shadow. A horror film from director Jordan Peele that evokes fear and provokes deep thought. The film skillfully combines elements of thriller, mystery and social commentary, creating a mysterious and dark mood. Not only does Saw brilliantly tell a story of duality and darkness, but it also explores themes of division and identity in modern society. Superb performances from Lupita Nyong'o and Vincent Cassel bring depth and intensity to every scene. Despite some twists in the plot, "Us" makes us think about our dark sides and fears. This film is not only a good horror film, but also a necessary work of art that provokes discussion and opens eyes to the deepest secrets of human nature.

Objectively a bad movie full of plot holes. This is another one of those films that you’re supposed to like more than I actually do. I watched when it originally came out and just recently got the nerve to stomach a second attempt… oof still bad. Hopefully Nope will be better, but I’m getting similar vibes tbh.
