A delightful mash-up of everything ’80s, from E.T. to Madonna, Princess Diana to Roxy Music, the Jackson family to Ronald Reagan, this anachronistic retelling is faithful to Coolidge’s original film, but with its own flashy new touches.
If you love musicals, teen romance, and the 80s, you’re going to have a blast watching Valley Girl.

As it stands, the movie is just as slick as the lifestyle it supposedly mocks.
Despite the occasional one-liner that lands and the commitment of a game cast, this Valley Girl’s charms are blotted out by its noisy neon brightness. By the end, even a fan of the original may feel dread instead of glee at the rise of synth on the soundtrack, announcing yet another interminable musical number.
Everything about director Rachel Lee Goldenberg’s film is bright, garish, and peppy. Although watchable as a sort of mindless flashback, it doesn’t work as a movie.
The original film was not a time capsule; it was a snapshot, capturing a unique time and place. The new film simply doesn’t have the same spark and energy.
Fun acting, playful imagery, and a catalog of great ‘80s songs should be the winning recipe for a delightful musical. Alas, the Valley Girl remake doesn’t have the musical chops to separate itself from being compared to an overly long episode of “Glee” and definitely doesn’t bring anything new to the film world that will influence movies for years to come, as the original did four decades ago.
1980s! Smart references, great use of '80s music to push the story and forward. The early beach scenes look a little too much like "From Justin to Kelly" and I thought this would be on the level of a really cheap cable movie. Boy, was I wrong. Fun references, a real understanding of 80s culture wrapped in an enjoyably colorful package that is also balanced by a darker, yet equally satisfying side. So many references that I need to watch it again. Acting, singing dancing, sets/props, costumes, and lighting are all terrific. Great movie for pure entertainment.

This musical remake of 80s classic Valley Girl is an absolute blast. Set in the 80s mostly a concerned mother (Alicia Silverstone) consoles her daughter by telling her about her youth in the 80s. The awesome Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) stars as her teen version. She hangs at the mall, beach, etc. With her friends as sporadic, lively musical numbers made if 80s hits rock the screen. Eventually she meets up with a hottie, Randy. He lives in L.A., is a punk singer and helps her to Express herself creatively. They have good chemistry and the film is just plain fun. Although some of the singing isn't top notch it's a entertaining flick that doesn't take itself seriously and neither should you.

Do you love the Nicolas Cage 1983 film Valley Girl? Then you will hate this unfaithful abomination that completely misinterprets everything that made the original film a classic.
Do you like teen musical romantic comedies, 80s kitsch, bright, over-saturated neon colors and 80s music? You will like this movie.
On the bright side, we dodged a bullet not having to listen to Nick Cage sing.
