Hov consolidates himself as the greatest rapper of all time in this album. He speaks truth and his flow is still incredible. I would have liked a longer album but it's better having only 10 tracks if all of them are great.

Great album, great beats. Especially love the depth of the lyrics. It has a classic sound and stitch back beats to an earlier hip hop era, which is welcome. Some great songs like 4:44, Bam, The Story of O.J. Obviously the Tidal issues will overshadow the album but it's still a strong album.

The album is amazing. Full of smart and deep songs. Wordplay is amazing, and you get a sense that real Rhythm and Poetry is being delivered. Those who are looking exclusively for club bangers pass right beside the great message that's being sent. I think this will go down as another Jay Z classic album.

A deep and inspirational album from Jay-Z which deals with real social issues such as building upward mobility within the black community. It questions the very materialistic lifestyle which rap was founded upon. The beats are great and Jay-Z delivers some insane flows on this project. The album doesn't need to be long because Jay-Z gives his message clearly.

It is absolutely incredible after all these years, Jay-Z can release a banger like he has with 4:44. His honest lyrics combined with the usual amazing Jay-Z wordplay makes 4:44 one of the best 2017 releases. His flow is just incredible to listen to and the beats on every track is on par.

Jay-Z is at his most vulnerable here, as every song reveals what is so great about the character and lyricism of Jay-Z, while at the same time revealing how flawed he is as a human being and a person who carries certain moral beliefs. The 3rd album released after the infamous night of the elevator battle scene features male drama, family feuds and killer samples perfectly mixed with hip-hop/rap. JAY Z evolves drastically following some kind of Kendrick-Lamared poetic tones that'll definitely earn him some golden gramophones next year.

HIghlights: Kill JAY Z, The Story of O.J., Family Feud, 4:44, Legacy.

I have to say, after the plethora of lackluster releases from Jay over the last several years, this next project is a pleasant surprise. Possibly the most impressive characteristic of this album is the fact that the artist is currently 47 years old, still outdoing almost everyone in his genre. For an artist who has released 13 solo studio albums, somehow this project is refreshing and feels completely different than the rest. it begins with a rough cut into his insecurities and downfalls, followed by looks at racial issues and words from his mother. These tracks lead up to an apology for his infidelity to his wife, and the album closes with a letter to his children on how to continue the legacy.

This project possesses meaning and emotion, concepts almost completely forgotten by modern hip hop and rap albums. Regardless of what the general audience has to say, the Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee blessed the true hip hop fans that have better things to do than listen to mumble rap with an album that deserves praise.

Project 4:44, produced by NO I.D., is truly characterized by it's samples. From the laid back grooves off Nina Simone's 'Baltimore' to the thrill inducing cries of Hannah Williams & The Affirmation's 'Late Nights and Heartbreaks' one may find themselves asking, "Did I click on a Bond movie soundtrack by mistake?" Though only 10 tracks, the samples provide Carter's 13th studio album the fullness of a two-disc release; with each sample providing a stroke of pain, pride, power, and regret on the canvas of fortune.

Accompanying the top-of-the line production is arguably Carters' greatest display of lyricism in his twenty-one year career. Void of the stylized grunts punctuating each verse in Magna Carta Holy Grail, 4:44's unsatisfactory predecessor, the world-renowned songwriter's ink runs dry in an industry that has long left the pen behind. Whether it be a heartbreaking revelation of the $1.16 billion dollar couple's infidelities or the disappointed condemnations of a younger brother's missteps - each song is a different chapter in the diary of New York's finest.

4:44 is both a shining testament to the legendary artist's unparalleled success and a humbling self-exposé of a prideful man's sinner's remorse. On behalf of hip-hop, old and new, thank you for your continued contributions to the industry, Mr. Carter. Or, to put it more plainly: you crazy for this one, Jay!

It's rare that a man of Jay Z's status releases an album so intimate and vulnerable, especially one that pertains to the media frenzy that followed him last year. 4:44 is as complex and intricate as his spouse's "Lemonade," but all the more confrontational towards his actions and their consequences.

The opening track serves as JAY's tragic overview of his relationship with Kanye West. While the album does slow down a bit after that, with some tracks that feel unfinished, like "Caught Their Eyes" which does feature a nice feature from Frank Ocean, it does improve a lot in it's second half. The title track features some of JAY's most emotionally-honest lyrics on the whole album, "Family Feud" flows with a beat built on a luscious soul sample, and "Legacy" presents us with his more introspective and contemplative side for a satisfying closer. While other people might enjoy "4:44" more than i did, i can't deny that he has given us a short but sweet project that stands above his last album.

Jay sounds bored and sleepwalking on the majority of the tracks, even as he directly addresses Beyonce's (correct) allegations from 'Lemonade'. He also addresses his interest in progressive social issues, as well, especially the issue of race and being black. Another track is about his mother coming out as gay and emphasizing that fact that sexuality is irrelevant to one's ability to love or be loved themselves. To me, all of these things are interesting and valuable to hear, and good to know that Jay is on the right side of history.

HOWEVER, even these good intentions are severely undercut by the fact that this album sounds very boring. Jay never sounds like he is going very hard, even when he clearly believes what he is saying and wants to move into an advice-doling elder statesman phase while maintaining his hip-hop relevance. In many of the tracks, it actually sounds like some of these raps are being read off of a page in front of him in the booth. When even Frank Ocean sounds like he's barely interested in the track he appears on, it really is not a good sign.

Some inventive beats and styles that arise towards the end of the record liven it up a little bit, but by the end, the overall impression one is left with is that a lot of people told Jay that he had to make a record that addressed the turmoil of the past 3 years of his life, but he does so in a "checking the boxes" kind of way. While the reflection and insight are admirable, it often feels like Jay could go much deeper if he wanted to, but doesn't truly want to do that.

Mostly, though, this record feels like content released from a huge corporation (which is exactly what this record actually is). I actually tried to look up the first track ('Kill Jay Z") on Youtube this morning, and the only clip with actual music is a commercial for the album (which is fine, btw. I get it, you have to sell records, not make content available for free.) Anyway, the commercial itself is the beat from the song set to a black and white clip of a young, panicked black man running towards the camera wearing a shirt that says 'Stay Black', with the implication being that he is running from danger, or the cops, or both. This is also fine, and this commercial is in keeping with the themes of the album. What angers me, and feels disingenuous is the fact that this clip ends with heavy branding from Sprint all over the place, WHICH HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT WE JUST SAW HAPPEN IN THIS VERY SERIOUS-SEEMING CLIP. It's like, "BLACK LIVES MATTER! Also, if you enjoy Jay-Z and the Black Lives Matter movement, please consider using Sprint for all of your cellular telephone needs."

The best thing I can say about this record is that it at least makes some small attempt at the personal in a way that I haven't heard from Jay before. The worst thing I can say, though, is that it more often feels like a year-end statement to the investors. :(

If you’re into grim celebrity gossip it’s probably a 10/10 album but personally I feel like they’re taking advantage of their fans and making them subscribe to Tidal. I also doubt the legitimacy of their claims.(The more Beyonce and Jay-z talk about their life the more subscribers they get and I sense a hit of exaggeration in the lyrics and this has been done to gauge the weak minded and those interested in the celebrity nonsense)
I just wish Jay-Z made a meaningful album and not a meaningless one based on false claims. I admire his business accumen as this album has been marketed incredibly well.

Jay-Z follows up McHG with more snore inducing music. His last great album was AMerican Gangster (or WTT if you want to include that) and I think it's time he retires. His idiot stans on KTT may hype this up but I think in a month we'll all realize Jay's days as an interesting lyricist/artist are over. He should have stopped after Black Album.

If you care to hear a multi millionaire complain about his life and do it while trying to somewhat keep a rhythm. To what can only be described as the type of beats a 50 year old man would choose to make a album over. Then this album is for you otherwise get it only if you need a to cure insomnia .

Jay-Z delivers introspection, maturity, growth over unconventional flows on beautifully produced tracks. This latest endeavour shows us that he still has it. The mature lyrics display the human side of Hov, which is something we've long awaited.

Not only is the record a well crafted project but, it is also concise and focused. Jay doesn't give us a moment of pause; instead, he delivers

Not only is the record a well crafted project but, it is also concise and focused. Jay doesn't give us a moment of pause; instead, he delivers a hefty array of subjects to contemplate. Which in turn makes this album something to listen to over and over. The great production and soulful tracks allow 4:44 to be a project to vibe to and to dissect.

While it's overall a great album, and will most likely be within Jay's top three or four records, nothing about this album makes it perfect.

What's missing: punchier lyrics, more complex flow, a fuller tracklist, and more introspection.

This is a great piece of art, but it's more like an appetizer than a full LP. We're wanting more.

Once again Jay Z cannot expand your vocal capacity talent either make a full non-sampled album. I talk about originality when I say that you can't express your truly emotions through people fable and catchy noises already known or effect phrases about adultery.

This is up there with Jay-Z's, who for me is a genius, best work. A collection of influences come together to make an album that is innovative, tackles deeply personal themes yet at the same time is ear catching and inspiring. For an artist of Jay-Z's stature to open himself up to this extent at this point in his career and life is staggering. 4.44 is an album that has everything.

Really like how raw it was. The album really shows both vulnerable and egocentric side of him. Lyrics are great and deep. None of the tracks are fillers. Overall, it's a good album.

On this short but rich album Jay-z honestly ruminates on his personal struggles, family, race, success, modern music and his legacy.

After four years of silence Jay-Z is back with this fire project. It is very hard to believe it was only produced by one person, No I.D. The production is just top notch, ground-breaking and pure. Samples are fire. Tracks have their own identity, they are inhabited even before Jay-Z comes to embellish them.

He delivers beautiful and highly polished lyrics from start to bottom. Jay

He delivers beautiful and highly polished lyrics from start to bottom. Jay almost never sounded that confident in my opinion. On top of that, he manages to be tender and vulnerable, and God knows how much these qualities are missing in the 'rap game'. I thank him for keeping the album straight-forward with ten titles 'only'. Themes addressed are as terrific as the guests appearances (Frank Ocean & Beyoncé to only cite them). I was a bit disappointed by the Damian Marley track but I think the performance remains decent.

Very engaging and rewarding. It's a pleasure to listen to it again and again through years.

A few tracks stand apart: "Story Of OJ" and "Mercy Me" both impress for verve and venom if not his every chain of thought. Otherwise it's all so dry that after a couple of listens it feels more like spoken word. [Sep 2017, p.62]

Already one of the greatest rappers in history, this is the kind of late career artistic push that will cement Jay-Z’s place on rap’s Mount Rushmore. This is Jay-Z walking onto the stage alone, standing contritely in front of the world, and speaking from the heart, revealing himself in order to heal.
