    These songs, simply put, are great: vivid, funny, full of feeling and supremely catchy, even if they don’t quite offer a clear picture of who Lil Nas X is offstage or off-screen.

    In terms of catchy beats and somewhat meaningful lyrics, each song has one or the other, and Lil Nas X just needs a little more time to get them to match up.

    With 7, instead of blurring the country and rap lines further, he takes the well-trod path to the rock and rap border. Like country-rap, rap-rock is a genre we’ve endured for a long time, maybe too long. Lil Nas X’s version is much more nuanced, if a tad straight-laced.

    It’s ... not good. A haze of half-gestures and amateur missteps. A deflated balloon. The songs end quickly, as if embarrassed. Apart from the nonsensical yet warm electro-trap song “Panini,” none of the new tracks display even a stray ember of creative curiosity.

    In all seriousness this album is a mess of ideas and songs. Old Town Road is what it is. Panini is the only song that really hit with me, short and to the point. Songs like F9mily and C7osure stand out, but not in the good way. Is this a rap EP or what? I get that's he's a young artist that is experimenting, but when even your EP has no direction, I can only hope he can be better at finding a direction for an album.    … Expand
