Aug 25, 2017Their music is tighter, sharper and aiming for the jugular in its first shot. In the simplest terms, the band crafted a record that fills the bigger venues they are sure to be playing now and in the future.
Aug 24, 2017On All We Know, PVRIS take a crucial step on the right course toward finding their own trademark sound.
Aug 24, 2017All 10 tracks here bear such scars, adding up to a staggering work of honesty, beauty and artistic achievement. It’s hugely impressive on those terms alone... but even more so given everything PVRIS endured in its creation.
Q MagazineAug 24, 2017It's a sensational return. [Sep 2017, p.115]
Kerrang!Aug 24, 2017A little piece of heaven indeed. [26 Aug 2017, p.48]
Aug 25, 2017PVRIS might have been to hell and back, but a new era is here, and it’s utterly brilliant.
Aug 24, 2017By the time ‘No Mercy’ arrives, there’s no escaping how catchy this record is.

Dec 31, 2018This is another new addition to my library and also another angle I did not expect my tastes to head: toward this incredibly interestingThis is another new addition to my library and also another angle I did not expect my tastes to head: toward this incredibly interesting Massachusetts outfit. Initially when I first heard PVRIS in August, I liked it at the around the same level that I liked Eisley (see Narrow Misses below) and almost wrote it off as a “good but not quite”. But what surprised me and also earned it a spot in the top 10 was the severe resurgence it made in my tastes throughout November/December. I just couldn’t get enough of it for weeks and it dawned on me that this was an unbelievable album.
Despite suffering from stupidly long title-itis like I The Mighty (let’s call it Heaven/Hell for now), there’s so much to love about this record. Lynn Gunn’s vocals are absolutely exceptional and she comes right at you in Heaven, the opening track oozes passion. Throughout Heaven/Hell the engagingly atmospheric electronic rock sound blended with elongated vocal hooks (Anyone Else) and vivid drum pacing (Walk Alone) makes for an engaging and entertaining listen. It’s tough to compare PVRIS to other artists, maybe it’s just because I haven’t been around this style for long, but the best comparison I could make is a mix between Thirty Seconds to Mars and Paramore. The album reaches its climax on No Mercy, a much quicker (almost punk) track with the insanely memorable “there’s blood in the water but it tastes so sweet” by Gunn. The hairs on my neck shoot upright on every listen.
Best Tracks: Heaven - Anyone Else - Walk Alone - No Mercy

In some ways it feels like a far more fleshed out and developed version of what artists like AURORA, Purity Rings, Chvrches and even Grimes are doing (not meant as a slight to any of them, all of whom are great and of whom I consider Grimes an era-defining artist).
It is 'pop' enough to hook casual listeners if they give it a bit of time.
Worth it for any music enthusiast.… Expand
