  • Summary: The San Diego-based band returns with their fourth album of dark, atmospheric music, following previous albums '1,' '2,' and, yes, '3' (c'mon guys, what happened to '4?'). This one is a concept album of sorts, about a murder mystery.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 9 out of 12
  2. Negative: 0 out of 12
  1. The concept is brilliant and musically the Black Heart Procession have never sounded better.
  2. What it all comes down to is that the album is not only damn fun to listen to, but it has enough aura and vibe that you may want to make it your personal soundtrack for this summer.
  3. Resonance
    80
Decidedly more up-tempo [and] noticeably more sardonic than previous efforts. [#36, p.58]
  4. A number of songs crumple under the weight of the album’s ambition.... Regardless, Amore del Tropico is a fine, fine record: a lively, lovely concept album that bridges the gap between Nick Cave and Calexico.
  5. Taken as a concept, Black Heart's disc is -- ironically enough -- a lot of fun to listen to.
  6. Mojo
    70
It's a little too long to sustain its fetid boudoir ambience; but that aside, this remains a deep red velvet swoon of an album. [Jan 2003, p.93]
  7. The album's tone and tunes and imagery and such are all still on the same haunted-house/boat-of-the-dead kinda kick they've kicked out on their three previous, numerically-titled jams.
