It is instinctive but planned, primal but enlightened, and hazy but focused. The only sure thing about it is that it is Ulver’s finest work to date.

ATGCLVLSSCAP will be different for everyone. But undeniably, it's an entrancing piece of music, collecting every bit of Ulver's legacy and throwing it to the wayside, making room for something transcending the band's 30 year existence.

Ulver has once more created a record that will live far beyond this time and will be spoken of in the most reverent of tones and that’s as it should be.

The unorthodox means of composition ensures that the material on ATGCLVLSSCAP feels alive; blessed with some formidable grooves it retains a freshness and zeal that might have proved elusive if it had been recorded as a conventional studio album.

Is it fun? Well, yes, even if it does end up sounding like 15 different musical assemblages from an equal number of historical periods playing at once. [Feb 2016, p.59]

The late-album arrangement of these two outliers feels unnecessary and out-of-place. Two steps forward, one step back: such is the dance of courting other genres, even if the risks have helped keep Ulver vital.

The album is one long ambient jam and precisely as exciting as that sounds. [16 Jan 2016, p.53]

Fans of the band will certainly be pleased by many tracks on this album, and I would certainly recommend it as a wonderful celebration of Ulver’s musical skill. Although its overall structure has its flaws, the songs on ATGCLVLSSCAP are too good for me to hold that against them. Expand

The first time I heard the album is a collection of improvised live appearances I said it cannot work well... even for Ulver. Especially afterThe first time I heard the album is a collection of improvised live appearances I said it cannot work well... even for Ulver. Especially after I haven't (yet?) found their last album (collaboration with Sunn o))) to be as interesting as their other works.
But oh boy was I wrong! I only took a couple of songs to make me awed. And it gets event better.
The album lasts for about 80 minutes, but I couldn't bother, it's so intriguing that it finishes before you know it and what you're left with is wanting more..
It's hard to believe, but after such masterpieces as "Kveldssanger", "Nattens Madrigal", "Marriage of..", "Perdition City" or "Shadows of the Sun", "ATGCLVLSSCAP" may actually be their best album to date.
