Pink reunites with trusted collaborators like Max Martin, Shellback, Greg Kurstin and Billy Mann on Beautiful Trauma. They help make the record sound both fresh and familiar, with occasional curves like the gospelized rave-up “I Am Here.”

With Beautiful Trauma then, Moore proves that she’s both still relevant, and a vital, confident female voice on the pop circuit who has impressively never really succumbed to the pressures of the overly-sexualised pop machine.

Trauma's chilled-out middle sags, but "Revenge," her bad-romance duet with Eminem, is an early shot of energy; Max Martin and Shellback's homage to Dr. Dre's skip-step beats may be too on the nose, but Em's rhymes nicely recall a time when even lunatics rode bright hooks.

Overall, it does the job, but no more than that.

Beautiful Trauma's neat construction renders the album less than the sum of its parts, but individual songs work well enough, thanks in no small part to Pink's personality and charisma.

An album with dirgeful ballads, though they do at least let her show off her excellent voice. [Dec 2017, p.109]

Although Beautiful Trauma does stick to an overarching emotional theme more than most of her excellent recent albums, Trauma is nonetheless an odd, morose beast that at times plays into Pink’s worst instincts (i.e. leaning towards cliché when she never really had problem avoiding it before).

This is an enjoyable album with many great tracks.

    The standouts:

"What About Us" is one of the best songs that P!nk has ever done because it speaks to the marginalized, the need to find a solution to what has marginalized people, love, trust, and the need to wake up and take action. We all need to be loved.

"For Now" emphasizes the perfect past and wanting to return to the good times.

"I Am Here" is phenomenal and full of energy. Live life, enjoy the little things, the fact that worse places exist even when we think we are in the worst of places. and moving on despite falling to the depths. Anywhere can be home.

"Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" is about fighting on, not being quiet, and not being tied down.

    Superb.

But I mean, personally, I never went for Pink looking for anything innovative. She uses to bring us those little cute pop rock bops with a lot of attitude and we all love it. But the thing with this album is that is doesn't have much of that. The first single is very uninspired, some songs don't go anywhere (Whatever You Want is incredibly monotonous, Revenge's chorus is a huge let down), and there are too many snoozey ballads. Still, I don't think it's a bad album. Just kinda boring, and not something I'd listen to again in full. A shame, because I replayed The Truth About Love a thousand times. From this one, I liked the opener, Secrets, and the track that comes after it. The rest goes from ok to very boring. Expand
