Aug 22, 2022Bigger. Messier. is less a remix album and more a shockingly impetuous experiment that leaves its source material violently splayed across the landscape. If you found Big Mess to be overwhelming, then Bigger. Messier. will be no fun for you at all. By the same token, if Big Mess fascinates you, this double album will be all the more engaging.

Aug 22, 2022Overstuffed remix collections like this are hit and miss by nature, but Bigger. Messier. acknowledges this with its very title, and its impressive cast takes the original songs in some fascinating directions, making the whole thing worthwhile for fans of any of the artists involved.

Aug 22, 2022Bigger. Messier. does drag a little towards the end – particularly when Elfman’s collaborators show too much respect for the original tracks. (Stu Brooks’ remix of “True” is an example of this: the bassist played with Danny Elfman at Coachella, and you get a sense that he’s a little too close to this music as a result.) But then the album closes out with an absolutely bonkers remix of “Happy” by Little Snake, who somehow manages both to deconstruct the track into smithereens and to enhance its gothic, trippy essence.
