There isn't a moment when Arthur Lee is anything less than Arthur Lee: brilliant, unpredictable and relentless in his drive to reinvent himself. [No. 116, p.59]

As with everything Lee put his songwriting mind and hands to, though, his original work quickly overshadows any marks of inspiration on these tunes.

Blessed with a raw, punchy sound, however, Black Beauty is far superior, more eclectic and fully-realised [than Reel To Real].

It’s a strong album, but it’s not another Forever Changes, whose accomplishments in retrospect were unrepeatable, or even another Four Sail. On the other hand, Lee wasn’t aiming to craft something in that vein.

Black Beauty is an album that needs to be out in the world, that needs to be celebrated. It doesn’t have to be a new classic in the Love discography. It just needs to be another interesting chapter in the band’s story. It is that and then some.

Black Beauty is one of the strongest and most consistent albums of his hard rock period, and if it isn't quite a lost classic, it's the missing link between Vindicator and Love's Reel to Real; it's nearly as good as the former and genuinely superior to the latter.
