This album is special. Each and every song on here has a meaning behind it.

The production on here is extremely unique and different, and definitely takes some extra listening to get used to. The vocals on here by Frank Ocean are perfect. You can hear the emotion and sadness in his voice. Frank's vocals in White Ferrari, Seigfried, and Godspeed always make me tear up a bit.

The second time I heard this I even liked it more but still felt something was missing. I recently went back again to it again for a third time and this time absolutely loved it except for Facebook story and good guy but those aren't even songs really so it's fine. I would say the futura free last 4 minutes are a bit boring but if only 6 minutes of the album is bad I'll take it. This is one of the best albums of alltime, is it better than Channel orange though? It's different that's for sure this album is more consistent. I am sure when frank drops an album again he won't disappoint he has 3 classics in my opinion and I'm including the mixtape.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. impeccable, such an album deserves to benchmark into musical talent. Its simplicity that drives such an album, and without a doubt has moved me as a listener. Though I understand many are not acquainted with the lof-fidelity of some of the songs, I implore you to listen to it again. Its tonality adds to the raw and almost unaltered emotional drive frank presents. Frank explores minimalism here, no instrument feels overused or misrepresented. instead, ocean grabs you by the ear and with rich melody, drags you through a velveteen impression on life's bumps. From the catchy beat of nikes to the romanticized pink+white to the melancholic self-control. A sound might, I add, force any ear into a trance. Finally reaching towards the satin-Esque white Ferrari and Seigfried and the honey-coated godspeed, frank ends the album with an emotional epilogue of his thoughts. Though many times it seems incohesive, that's the beauty of such an album. It's an honest representation of the imperfect human mind. The non-linear melding of memories strung by emotions. Blonde is a statement of Frank's prowess as an artist and his genre-bending antics. All I ask is the viewer to spare some patience for multiple listens and potentially dreary nights. Expand

Frank's tales of young love on songs like White Ferrari and Ivy activate instant nostalgia while other tracks like Nikes examine the human condition on a broader scale and the hypnagogic feeling of drug and alcohol-induced nights out at the renowned Berghain in Berlin. Well this sort of up and became one of the greatest albums of all time out of nowhere.

Not like it could be considered too much of a surprise, given how much hype Frank Ocean had built for himself after his masterful Channel Orange, an album which took a new approach to ideas in way that neither relished nor offended the legacy of artists that preceded his sound. It wasn't just new and funky and arty, it was catchy and enjoyable. And so it came to be in just one album that a Frank Ocean release was a sure thing, in much the same way as Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead, or pre-Yeezus Kanye West.

Almost none of that is true for blonde, a pop album that tries its hardest not to be one. Its translucent, syrup-thick production drowns out anything that even remotely resembling conventional melody. For almost any other album, this would be a complaint or source of derision, but like the aforementioned example of Radiohead, taking the weird route was the same thing as taking the smart route. The hypnotic, trance-like production of blonde gives it the feeling of a therapeutic retreat only not so weepy and heavy-handed. From this primordial sonic soup comes the occasional cry of sincere and palpable emotion and feeling that punctures the eardrum, but not as swiftly as it punctures the soul.

Frank Ocean created a musical masterpiece, an emotional journey, a modern classic. Opening track "Nikes" gives you a melancholic mood that continues on Ivy. Track "Pink+White" feels like a throwback to the "Channel Orange" era. No cap it's a beautiful song with unexpected and unverified Beyonce appearance. Interludes "Be yourself" and "Facebook story" are well fit in too. tracks "Solo" and "Skyline to" feel like a rise to something emotionally powerful. And we get it, "Self control" is an intimate story that is being shared with every listener. "Good guy", again an interlude that makes the album much more consistent. track #9 is something that will be definitely remembered in music history, "Nights" feels 4th dimensional. Thats the only way I can describe my feeling. Track #10 is definitely the worst one for me, but I still find it likable. "Pretty sweet" is crazy though. Just crazy. "Close to you" is definitely one of the most underrated songs on this album. Amazing production including the Steve Wonder sample. "White Ferrari" broke me as a man. Unforgettable track. "Seigdried"... Something that not many people pick up about this song, is the titles relevance to what he's trying to convey in this song. Seigfried is the German word for 'Victory'. This is reminiscent of the song in a much deeper level. Frank released the first version of this song in August of 2013, and quoted 'i'd rather go to jail... I'd rather try hell'. In the current version, he says 'I'd rather go to jail... I've tried hell'. Frank suffered pretty heavy depression, and attempted suicide. Hence why he was gone for so long. quoting he's 'tried hell', shows that he already tried to go to the darkside. But what makes this song so beautiful, is how overall it's saying how he was in such a bad mind frame, but he never gave up. To me, this is the most beautiful song on the album. I could honestly go on forever about the meanings behind it, but Imo it really shows his victorious story of overcoming a rough relationship, being in a relationship with a man whose a closeted gay, and struggling with depression. It portrays struggle and helplessness but signifies we all can overcome that, which is honestly such a beautiful testament to the album. "Godspeed" is another love ballad from Frank, great track. "Futura free" Perfect ending for one of the best albums in music history. Thank you "Blonde", thank you Frank Ocean. Expand

It is also lyrically and emotionally dense, so it's not just ear candy, but substantive. This is a music legend at the peak of his powers and listening to it is an absolute treat. Expand

Frank seems to hold complete control of everything throughout the album and it appears that he completely shaped "Blonde" into what he wanted. Social statements are echoed and amplified, with Frank speaking on topics such as drugs, life, philosophy, and sadness, making the listener think twice about every line, meaning and entendre while mellowing out or crying to the dreamy yet eerie background. The minimalist project is jampacked with detail, something very few artists can pull off, and it serves as a reminder of Frank Ocean's ability to craft a masterpiece. Expand

It's captivating to hear from the same guy who opened up to the world back in 2012 four years down the line. He's lived his life in that time, had experiences worth talking about before talking about them, much like channel ORANGE used experiences of his past to create a TV channel collection of narrative snippets that connected to him in some way, even if it was indirectly. By using the time he took to find something to talk about through his art, he's created an album of significantly higher emotional potency, and it's all the better for it. I can't think of many things I could fault here, Futura Free being an exception, but regardless it serves as a fitting finale to an album that has covered so many different things in searingly personal detail.

In the four years since Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, the lines between hip and hop and R&B have continued to blur- Rappers are “singing” (Auto-tune, sigh) while contemporary R&B artists are opting for a more thuggish delivery. Ocean’s newest release, Blonde, is content to further obscure our perception of a genre with an unexpected emphasis on surreal synth chords, lush guitar strumming, and echoed vocals.

The setting of these tracks is an intimate one, but not in the typical sense of sounding “live”- with its stream of conscious lyrics, and dreamlike echo of vocals, it’s as if the listener is swimming through Ocean’s thoughts. In contrast to the narrative structure of Channel Orange, tracks like “Pink and White” find Ocean collecting fading memories from past relationships, and assorting them into cryptic collages. He is more forward on “Ivy” when he exclaims, “I thought I was dreaming when you said you loved me;” the accompanying guitar bubbles and pops, conveying this moment of wonder.

The floaty nature of these reflective love songs is grounded by the more soulful, gospel numbers of the album. Whereas the hopeful tone of “Godspeed” follows its somber organ play, “Solo” juxtaposes this instrumentation with eccentric lyrics about drug use, with Ocean singing from several different perspectives. Whether he’s singing as himself, a crackhead, or just a guy trying to get by, the rock-bottom-desperation in Ocean’s voice is impossible to escape as preaches, “Inhale, inhale, that’s heaven."

Structurally, Blonde is scattered- songs can be quick to switch tones, go off on tangents, or drift into unexpected bridges. “Nights” seems more conventional on this nearly percussion-less album, with its ticking hi-hats and crisp backbeat, but glitches out in the verse as it interchanges stop-go guitars with what seems to be sampled xylophone(??). Ocean is more aggressive here as he raps the frustrations of man seeking solitude from the “every night **** every day **** A brief moment of escape is sonically conveyed by an abrupt switch, in the last third of the track, to a tranquil atmosphere, where wandering piano follows Ocean’s contemplative mood.

Blonde plays like passing daydreams, ones that seamlessly slip in and out of consciousness on long car rides. Like Radiohead’s latest release, A Moon Shaped Pool, this album isn’t something you can pop on and listen to at any given time. The most rewarding listens are experienced in a reflective state, or while slightly distracted (working on a project, reading, taking a shower, drinking a cup of coffee with friends). For the hardcore fans that find themselves constantly annotating lyrics online, I leave you with some lines from “Seigfried” that’ve been cycling around in my head for about a week now-

Dreaming a thought that could dream about a thought

That could think of the dream that thought

That could think of dreaming and getting a glimmer of God

I be dreaming a dream in a thought

That could dream about a thought

That could think of dreaming a dream

An amount of hype that I feel made this album almost impossible to live up to expectations, and indeed it is by no means a classic, career defining album for Frank. The album is very stripped back, placing the emphasis on Frank's vocals which are stellar throughout. However I feel that a few features would have helped to break up the project, past collaborations with Earl Sweatshirt as well as Kanye West have all been hugely successful and there was a distinct lack of hip-hop influence on this album besides the amazing Andre 3000 track. The opening track, 'Nikes' is stunning and an atmospheric song that feels like a acid fuelled journey through Frank's mind. It is certain that Frank is an artist more than just a singer and the video that accompanied this song is also fantastic. 'Ivy' is another highlight along with 'Self Control' which features some of Frank's best vocals on the album. The back end of the album is thought provoking and poetic, 'Siegfried' is a hugely emotional song the songs following it add an extra layer of lyrical depth to the album. However the final track is pretentiously long and uninteresting. Overall, Frank has created a fantastic album that narrowly edged Channel Orange, however it is not the classic album that I and many others hoped for. Expand

Expand
