The album serves not only as a fitting tribute to his late friend and collaborator but a reminder of Lofgren's prowess as a guitarist, songwriter, bandleader, and vocalist.

A less-cluttered and more intimate take on “Remember You” might well have increased its potency as the closing cut. Nevertheless, the ‘less is more’ premise remains in effect just often enough on Blue For Lou to certify the record, name associations aside, as a memorable entry in the lengthy discography of Nils Lofgren.

Lofgren's voice is crackly, but plays perfectly. [May 2019, p.30]

Overall, it's a pleasant album and one that covers a lot of bases. [Jun 2019, p.86]

Lofgren's originals may not carry the same swagger, but when they're surrounded by these Reed co-writes, they're given a slight lift: the whole affair simultaneously feels like an affectionate tribute to a departed friend and a resuscitation of Nils's gut-level rock & roll.

Regardless of Lou’s input, this sounds like another solid Lofgren set.

The pick of the Lou-less numbers are Dear Heartbreaker, a marching homage to Tom Petty, and the shuffling, Springsteen-lite Pretty Soon. But the Reed/Lofgren songs muscle their way to the top of the pile. [Jul 2019, p.94]
