Bonny Light Horseman's eponymous debut is rich in folk history and offers a fresh take on centuries-old traditions. For trad-folk fans who like to dig deep, this record is a perfect launching point — there are endless avenues of history to be found here.

Add it all up and you’ve got not only one of the best albums of early 2020, but one worth remembering when it’s time to make your list at year’s end.

It’s true that the steady pace of the album may turn some people off (there’s barely any percussion to be found on the entire record), but for folk fans especially, there’s a rich vein of history mined on Bonny Light Horseman that makes for rewarding listening. Some songs, after all, are just timeless.

It’s all very nice and a bit surprisingly, like your grandma’s favorite stew with some unexpected new spices in it. For an impromptu gathering of talents, Bonny Light Horseman feels very lived in. Here’s hoping it’s not a one-off.

These great songs live on through reinvention; Bonny Light Horseman have done them proud. [Feb 2020, p.87]

This is classic folk that shimmers with a vitality and determination so hypnotic and cohesive, it seems like they wrote these selections themselves. And except for occasional passé references like “magpie’s nest,” “one evening fair,” and “by the roving of her eye,” there isn’t much dated about the gorgeous approach.

The trio are faithful to their ancient source material, while adding spacious arrangements, harmony choruses and subtle embellishments that amplify the songs' emotional punch. [Feb 2020, p.25]

Bonny Light Horseman gently cut these songs free from aging roots, transplanting them to the present.

Bonny Light Horseman marks its supergroup status in reserved performances that prioritize song and group, and it makes old songs into visions worth new consideration.

Hard to call this a debut in the hands of such accomplished musicians, but the sublime far outweighs the average here and gives hope for further chapters

It’s not the worst approach they could have taken, but again, there’s nothing super about adhering to the virtues of pop – and in turn, Bonny Light Horseman is a marginally decent record; nothing more.

Bonny Light Horseman resembles a somewhat above-average indie folk effort, not at all bad but not of lasting impact. Maybe they should have messed with this stuff a bit more.
