Boygenius’ lyrics are so strong, you could close your eyes and skip to any point of any song and find yourself being wowed in one way or another.

Bridgers stans a noirish, haunting, folk-pop, Baker an emotionally-scorching rock and Dacus a literary take on guitar music. On boygenius, however, the three become one, miraculously and pristinely so. Bridgers, Baker and Dacus pack a novel’s worth of narrative and as many masterful melodies (not to mention harmonies) into just 21 minutes that will leave you feeling as if you’ve had the wind knocked right out of you.

If the music here has the ebb and flow of more than one era, the lyrics wield sharper teeth. [2 Nov 2018, p.49]

The boygenius EP marks a stunning release from three singular artists. Hearing them integrate their particular gifts would be worth a listen alone, but the performances are so remarkable that the disc's background becomes trivial.

It’s when they come together on closer ‘Ketchum, ID’, an ode to the state of Idaho and the detachment of constant touring, that boygenius really comes into its own and sees the project become more than the sum of its parts.

Lyrically, all three mine traditionally sombre territory in their solo work, tying into broader cultural conversations regarding gender and mental health, and the words of boygenius maintain the same power and urgency.

Musically, the release doesn’t live up to the promise of the vocals. There’s not much here beyond standard indie. Nonetheless, it is very pleasant to listen to.

It feels like a greatest hit's album, and even the weakest song (Stay Down) is stronger than the standout tracks on most albums. I think this is a generation defining piece of art, and a true must listen for indie/emo folk fans. I've listened to this EP more times than I can count. If you vibe with it, check out their live performance at Brooklyn Steel (full video on youtube) and prepare to go on an incredible emotional journey. Expand

It feels to me this whole project exists just to capitalize on the whole indie chick's wave that critic's (and pervert's) cant get enough of. I've seen way too many bland indie act's coming out and being shoved down my throat by critics (snail mail, clairo) and it's starting to really bother me, especially considering how bland and uninteresting it feels compared to a lot of other stuff going on in the indie scene.
