There's much to digest here but absolutely no filler--each song is a priceless gem. [Jan 2004, p.110]
  2. Even the least-crucial songs feature a tough backing band and a powerful, raspy performance from Candi.

That they've been forgotten for 30 years seems almost a crime, because they've got just about everything real soul music needs. [Feb 2004, p.118]
  4. Emotion and soul run deep throughout (thanks to Staton's raw vocals), with each track an honest revelation.
  5. It's really good, good enough to make you wonder why you haven't heard of Candi Staton (more often).
  6. Like Aretha Franklin, Linda Jones, and Otis Redding, Staton's voice is the sound of emotion being ripped from the human heart and offered, bleeding and broken, pleading and yearning, to the listener.
  7. Show[s] that the early chapters of the Staton story may not match the later commercial success, but trump the four-to-the-floor stuff with grit-in-the-grooves southern soul.
  8. Though the arrangements are predictable, Staton's versatile voice is a revelation.

Tough, funky and proud, she sounds like she could have been the new Aretha. [Feb 2004, p.87]
