  • Summary: The second release from the Latin-folk supergroup, featuring members of Los Lobos.

  1. Offers up one superb song after another.... Even if you don't consider yourself to be much a Latin music fan, do yourself a favor and check out Canto.
  2. As great as Los Super Seven's self-titled debut still sounds, the new Canto, produced with even more flair by Los Lobos' Steve Berlin, widens the group's scope to include the entire Latin-American hemisphere, acting as an even broader tribute to Latino culture.
  3. Comparisons will inevitably be made between Canto and the Buena Vista Social Club disc, but the most significant similarity is that they both feature great songs and terrific musicianship.

Several arrangements lean to the left, bringing to mind another Los Lobos side project, the Latin Playboys. [3/16/2001, p.68]

A lush cruise through the Caribbean's romantic songwriting traditions with some additional stops in South America.
  6. Canto is a passionate mix of originals and material drawn from the traditions of Mexico, Cuba, and Peru.
  7. Los fans--as well as those who just love great, spicy rhythms--will quickly learn that they Canto live without this disc.

The Veloso and Baca tracks are sizzling and evoke their solo efforts. Calle 16, Compay Gato, and Teresa are great Latin numbers, and the The Veloso and Baca tracks are sizzling and evoke their solo efforts. Calle 16, Compay Gato, and Teresa are great Latin numbers, and the Mexican flavot of El Pescador and Maiz is right on. Better than the debut album, which is close to unbelievable but yes they achieved it. Expand

Album is worth it just for the tracks featuring Raul Malo. It is an absolute delight.

This album scored higher than the Strokes's Is This It? Seriosuly? How? Not even one score here is above 90 and yet it gets a 91. Then again,This album scored higher than the Strokes's Is This It? Seriosuly? How? Not even one score here is above 90 and yet it gets a 91. Then again, who would want to listen to this. It's complete garbage.

    Allow me to do the math: 90 + 90 + 90 + 83 + 80 + 80 + 75 = 588. Then 588 : 7 = 84.

I'd just like to point out that this gets a 90 even though its highest ranking is 90, and the majority are lower. It seems that the last I'd just like to point out that this gets a 90 even though its highest ranking is 90, and the majority are lower. It seems that the last four reviews count for ZERO? I know metacritic weights different reviewers based on their influence, dependability, etc. but how could this get a 90, mathematically speaking, unless the last four reviewers (which include billboard, a not unfluential outfit) COUNT FOR ZERO (or, at least, less than what little it would take to drag down this 90 a bit)? Someone show me what I'm missing. Why do these craptacular carribeans have one of the highest rated albums on this site? 90+90+90+83+80+80+75 divided by 7 = 84 Expand
