This album is strikingly inconsistent in comparison to I'm Wide Awake.

Disappointing, compared to previous albums. It's not bad, but it trades in the whole orchestra-idea for the immediacy of Bright Eyes earlier work, which is a bad deal in my oppinion.

The album is not bad. And still, I can't get in it, yet and the previous albums make it look rather bad.

Oh Bright Eyes I am sad to say this is just a very mediocre album. It lacks all the emotion and standout lyrical moments that made past releases so great. Reminds me a bit of digital ash in terms of the feel of the record, very polished and bland.

This album is such a disappointment compared to his previous albums. Formulaic and routine. It's time to stop emulating Dylan please.

It meanders without purpose. It really does drift in comparison with his better stuff.

The first half of the album is actually better than most all of I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, but the second half completely drowns in pretentiousness.

totally unable to follow up "i'm wide awake it's morning." this album is a clumsy, over-produced step in the wrong direction. his albums, however, do usually take a while to grow on me...so i'm not completely sure of this album's inadequacy yet, but my gut feeling tells me something is wrong. i had such high expectations, especially after hearing "four winds," which is totally unable to follow up "i'm wide awake it's morning." this album is a clumsy, over-produced step in the wrong direction. his albums, however, do usually take a while to grow on me...so i'm not completely sure of this album's inadequacy yet, but my gut feeling tells me something is wrong. i had such high expectations, especially after hearing "four winds," which is a great song, but my expectations were not met (at least not upon first impression). I will keep hope, though, that this album will grow on me, and hopefully seeing conor live next weekend will give me some insight into the music of cassadaga. Expand

a bad album from bright eyes. Bright eyes hasn't released anything good since fevers... and lifted days... These new albums seem to lack the emotional impact of those other releases.

I was really hoping this would be a good album. It turned out to be over-produced and pretty hard to listen to. Also, it'd be nice if he didn't sing in that annoying fake accent he has sometimes(it appears on soul singer in a session band, when he sais the word "band") At least he doesn't read the reviews, because he's not singing for us, as he once said on a good song.

People who gave this album a 10 should probably get out more, I love Bright Eyes too but this album is quite bland, don't love it because you love Connor, it will be doing him a disservice... anyways, the best part about this record is the packaging and even that got old quick.

You can get some great singles out of here, but the whole thing is too much.

As ambitious as this album is, there's a surprising lack of anguish on display. [Apr 2007, p.54]

Oberst's countryish genre studies have deepened with a very adult loneliness. [Apr 2007, p.89]
  3. The music doesn't always live up to the demands of the journey, but Oberst's trembling, vulnerable voice carries through to a rewarding conclusion.
