Cigarettes After Sex is a band that was recommended to me which I decided to give a listen to their brand new self-titled album. Straight off the bat the track ‘K’ presents their story-telling lyrics (“Think I like you best when you're dressed in black from head to toe, Think I like you best when you're just with me”) with a soft simple beat, clean bass guitar and acoustic strums (reminding me of Arctic Monkeys ‘AM’) that sounds like a band playing softly in a restaurant (that they reference a dinner date in a restaurant)

The track is about a no-string attached friend becoming his lover, later separating and wanting her back which presents the lyrical emotional theme about love, lush and loss as the lyrics on ‘Each Time You Fall Inlove’ continues the dialogue with his lover leaving and taking his money.

Their whole album keeps these stories being told with the vocals being easy to listen to as nothing important happens with the instrumental. The only thing that would happen is the tempo being slightly faster in the track ‘Apocalypse’ but keeping the same key as the track before ‘Sunsetz’.

Only problem I have with this album is after the track ‘Sweet’ it can start getting a little repetitive and boring as the tracks “Opera House” and “John Wayne” isn’t anything breath-taking.

Overall this album isn’t for everyone, doesn’t contain tracks you can dance to or have a fun time but I personally love the feel, the lyrics and the nice clean bass is a easy-listening album when walking or laying in bed overthinking about life.

Good: Apocalypse, Sweet | Least: Opera House, John Wayne

For me : easily the best album of 2017. it's an absolutely magnetic album which i can't stop listening to.

cigarettes after sex managed to record an album in which all the songs sound exactly the same but at the same time each one of them is a unique and beautiful gem.

the incredibly slow and melancholic tempo combined with Greg's hypnotic voice immediately draw you to a dim lit bar, clouded by thin smoke, where it leaves you to ponder about long lost love affirs.

the album has some incredibly touching and sincere moments : "it's so sweet knowing that you love me,
though we don't need to say it to each other, sweet.
knowing that i love you and running my fingers through your hair, it's so sweet"
exemplifies love, long lasting relationships and companionship perfectly, especially in the special atmosphere this album has.

other moments offer a different perspective on love and sex : "Well I know full well that you are
The patron saint of sucking cock
    Señorita, you're a cheater
    Well, so am I"

or just about craving so bad for someone : "And on the Lower East Side you're dancing with me now
And I'm taking pictures of you with flowers on the wall
Think I like you best when you're dressed in black from head to toe
Think I like you best when you're just with me
    And no one else..."

this is a album beautifully written and performed album which is different then anything else i have heard in a long time.

That music more sentimental, is one of the best albums to know how to stop anxiety and obsession with another person, and if it is possible to relax about having sex.

No solo es un buen CD que no nos está vendiendo imagen, sino que es una producción que tiene espíritu, se caracteriza por esas letras románticas y llenas de un profundo dolor.

In this album, Cigarettes After Sex don't do anything innovative, but what they do is amazing, for an audience between teenager reaching adult would be perfect, very nostalgic, melancholic and full of sadness, it's like when you are in a gray afternoon and you enjoy a tasty coffee and a cigar, other than that you are sad. Good arrangement of melody with lyrics.

It's not very different from what the band had been doing before, but it's a wonderful sound anyway. They raised a musical identity that differentiates them from other bands, much by the androgynous vocals combined with the gloomy and dark instrumental.

You will not have any trouble getting into this album. It's sweet, poetic, nostalgic, touching and moving. Tracks follow each other perfectly and something inside you wants it to never end. It's like taking a nap you don't want to wake up from. Greg Gonzalez's voice is in perfect hamrony with his lyrics and with the instruments that accompany him.
However I must be critic to write this

However I must be critic to write this note. And unfortunately I found a quite disappointing flaw to this project. At the end of it I felt like I listened to a long mixture of similar songs and lyrics. It's hard to tell the difference between all the songs, which almost all sound the same. This album is a long walk in the early morning.

The bands first full length studio albums is definetly something. The band does have an sound that has polished to the end. Lyric writing is on the peak and it goes perfectly with slow, sad but still romantic tones. The vocalist Greg Gonzalez does the singing also the way it should be done. Slow high-pitched, but sleepy voice. They have a good thing going and are going far for sure

BUT there is also a downside for this album which for me is big. They have a sound. But just one sound. It's good they have a way, but they really have not stepped far from it. There is 10 songs in the album, yet I feel like listening 1 song. The band does have potential, and lots of it. It just feels iike they are afraid of going to far from the core of the band - which is calm, edgy feelings from teenage years. This album could have been 8 maybe even 9 in the best scenario. Sadly I have to give 5 because they took the easy road. This album is the definiton of "one trick pony" for me.

In conclusion: they have lot of potential and a lot t give. They just need to realise they can't rely on same trick for too long.

An album consistent in quality, paired with the lead's angelic voice and dreamy tune.

Some of these stories are not fleshed out as poetic or romantic as the music might suggest, yet it’s forgivable in the sense that Cigarettes After Sex successfully transport you to an erotic world entirely their own.

The effect is a bit like pleasantly nodding off to a Mazzy Star record and, like the smoke off the titular post-coital gaspers, the intoxicating atmosphere lingers long after the tracks have played out. [Sep 2017, p.88]

Despite the still occasionally underdeveloped, teenage diary-like lyrics, there are glimpses of more comedic moments amongst the angst.
