  1. This is a record that proves, again, Joss Stone's considerable worth.
  2. The second half succumbs to R&B overproducers, unfortunately, but for a while, she's on the right freedom trail.
  3. She continues to hit each note with the precise amount of retro pomp that one would expect, and there are again moments when the '70s soul love affair gets a little carried away.
  4. Colour Me Free succeeds about as well as Stone's other records: It's quite good in the up-tempo bits--check out 'Big Ole Game,' featuring the incomparable Raphael Saadiq--and a little soggy in the ballads.
  5. Her raw vocal skills remain impressive, as does her taste in soul, and even if this feels off-kilter, not quite achieving a balance between retro and modernity, it does beat with a messy human heart, one that was subdued on Introducing, so perhaps she did need to break free.
  6. Well, setting the bar that high that early on makes it nearly impossible to follow up with anything that could be better, let alone on par with how great that first track is.
  7. Devon’s finest makes a Motown-laced return.

There are signs of progress on her latest album, but they are in short supply. Colour Me Free gets on a roll midway through, peaking with "Governmentalist" before falling away much like her previous LP. The irony of the album title is also rather concerning, since Stone was not given the freedom by her record company to choose the album art as she saw fit, and no doubt a number of other things too.
