  • Summary: This debut full-length for the London group headed by Joe Goddard and Alexis Taylor is a (semi-)tongue-in-cheek mix of diverse styles such as fake-gangsta-rap, R&B, soul, electronica, and more.

An impressive balancing act that name-checks Ween and cracks wise about Stevie Wonder's vision while spinning bighearted melodies and harmonies over quirky beatscapes. [Jan 2005, p.89]
  2. Their songs are infectious, silly and often weirdly beautiful.

Restlessly inventive, Hot Chip also manage what many bedroom eclectics don't: crafting a genuinely organic, proper album, and the relaxed enthusiasm that drives this debut is absurdly infectious. [Jun 2004, p.94]
  4. Coming on Strong is one smooth record; even with all the glitch, all the bleeps and bloops, and all of the genre bending, it never leaves any residue behind.

The utilization of American hip-hop scenarios in the context of the English slang is exactly what makes "Coming On Strong" such a unique listen.
  6. A joyously audacious opening salvo.
  7. At its best, Coming on Strong sounds like a lukewarm Postal Service, and at its worst it sounds like Goldie Lookin' Chain.

A pretty good debut by Hot Chip. Even though, it isn't quite as good as there second LP "The Warning" when you compare the two. Other A pretty good debut by Hot Chip. Even though, it isn't quite as good as there second LP "The Warning" when you compare the two. Other than that, the album still has some pretty solid tracks to listen to (Keep Fallin', Playboy, Crap Kraft Dinner, Down With Prince, Shinning Escalade & Take Care). Overall, good album. Expand

This album does take some chances, has some quirky vocals, and comes off as unique and novel in a time when those qualities are rare. I can't say it blows my mind, but it's an adventerous debut that has me hooked for now. No telling if it will stand the test of time. Expand
