Unfortunately this album lacks all the substance that it hopes to achieve. Out of the whole album, I found 1 song that I would consider putting on my playlist and it's not even a very original song. I'm a huge fan of musicians merging genres and creating music that sounds classic while being original. However, this album at times seems to be a direct tribute certain classic bands without containing any substance at all. It's an album that focuses on the instruments and the "big band" effect while not focusing enough on the melody and the vocals. Expand

Hummm. I liked Broken Boy Soldiers a lot. It had some unique quality to it. This album, from what I've heard, just doesn't have it. I'm not much into White Stripes with the exception of a few songs, but I hear people saying Jack White is sounds more like himself in the White Stripes this time around than he did in the first Ranconteurs album. If so, that sux. The first Hummm. I liked Broken Boy Soldiers a lot. It had some unique quality to it. This album, from what I've heard, just doesn't have it. It's disappointing that Brendan Benson vocal presence on this album seems so significantly reduced. It's practically Jack White all the way. Added to which, the rhythm section now seem to ape Meg White's primative style. It's practically a White Stripes album in all but name.

  1. The result is neither refined nor especially modern, but it still evokes the thrill of playing hooky on a Friday afternoon.
  2. A notable progression from the foursome, and plenty of huge riffs to enjoy at the summer festivals.
  3. while one can easily imagine smoke machines spurting during many of the album's 13 other tracks, there is no irony in the mix. Just fun.
