Hynes can't resist tinkering with the formula and a pair of incongruous rap cameos disrupt a sketchy second half during which the feeling develops that Hynes is still holding back some of his best ideas for stars of a greater magnitude than himself. [Jan 2014, p.118]

Cupid Deluxe is wildly eclectic and nostalgic. [Jan 2014, p.97]

Cupid Deluxe is a shop window for the future sound of pop. But perhaps he should quit trying to be a Prince-like polymath and concentrate on being a nimble-fingered production wizard instead.

Hynes shows his trademark moves, and also demonstrates that he’s not a one-trick pony--he can expand his sound, and push further into new territory. But nothing on Cupid Deluxe reaches the same streamlined, lovelorn, economical heights as his production work for other singers.

It’s an effortless but unpredictable experience. Hynes may not turn up until midway through a song, but he glides seamlessly into the album’s comfortable atmosphere.

It's nostalgia is planted deep in romanticism and heartbreak, themes that become interchangeable on this record as neither are wat they seem. This album can easily be overlooked due to it's cohesion bordering on repetition and production sharing similarities but it becomes a strength on repeated listens. It revels in the subtle changes:background vocals, instrumentations . This is a brave delicate album on loves both halves:heartbreak and romance exploring loss in it's variable forms:loss of self, love, heartbreak, loneliness. This is truly a definitive release for the 10's . Favourite:time will tell, you're not good enough, always let you down,UNCLE ace Full Review »

It's ridiculous how the worst song You're not good enough - became a single. This album has a lot of good yet simple songs

But then I started listening to the album a few more times, and not only does that become an appreciation, and a good thing, but it starts to give the album a certain feel and vibe throughout that enhances it. I don't think it's necessarily a work of genius, but incredibly pleasant in a melancholy way. Full Review »
