This is indie pop at its absolute finest, Gold-Bears telling their own story of resentment and an always slippery grip on love with the same melancholic charm as some of the many unheard legends of the C-86 scene or the mixtape champions of the American underground.

Dalliance is the sound of a good band tightening to the point where they become something greater.

Despite some sugary moments, Dalliance, mostly ringing with fizzy excitement, is nonetheless a record that toes the line between bitter and sweet lonely dude moments.

[A] perceived lack of personality can't change the fact that Dalliance is one of the catchiest and most energetic guitar records of the year.

Dalliance is a brief half an hour expression of energy, without too much angst. It will never be considered a highly innovative venture, but the five-piece do manage to include some interesting twists on an old formula.

Few artists can make complaining about heartbreak passable subject material, and even fewer come out of that experiment more likable. Despite some too-similar musical passages and a lack of memorable moments in the album’s mid-section, a few gold standard hooks, some heart-pumping pop punk, and clever turns of phrase help Dalliance do just that for Gold-Bears.
