Dark Eyed Messenger explores themes of love, loss, nature and memory with the sort of understated evocativeness Crowley has made his own.

Dark Eyed Messenger is easily the songwriter's most intimate and sparsely decorated album thanks to assistance from Doveman. Their pairing amounts to a nearly alchemical wonder that gives us one of the songwriter's best offerings.

Swarming with rich atmospherics, it's a wee-small-hours treasure trove for fans of Blue Nile, Scott Walker or Bill Callahan. [Jan 2018, p.90]

Crowley has a relatively unique style and in the best possible way, stands out from other singer songwriters like a sore thumb. Lyrically,Crowley has a relatively unique style and in the best possible way, stands out from other singer songwriters like a sore thumb. Lyrically, this is fantastic and could work well as a collection of poems. Musically, it is understated, bare and very bleak. Crowley's vocal delivery sounds even wearier than before, crushed by the rollercoaster of love. The emphasis is on atmosphere rather than melody and while this approach lends itself to the lyrical content, as a listen it doesn't necessarily leave you wanting more immediately. This is as much due to the sheer darkness of the album more than anything else. "Dark Eyed Messenger" is a record to admire in a quiet space rather than one to play on rotation. Expand
