Even as the album moves between sleepy, whispered gentility and brief outbreaks of shaking guitar noise, the sullen mood and expansive echoing textures make Dead in the Boot feel of a single piece.

If you're an Elbow fan, you don't need me to tell you that this means go forth and buy the album with confidence that it's yet another solid assembly of somber melodies. If they're new to you, this will probably be just the beginning of a long and easy love affair with the band.

This compilation isn't for everyone and does contain a few duds. But there are more than enough gems in here to deserve a purchase from any Elbow fan or fanatic.

Dead in the Boot is a quieter, more abstract affair that feels surprisingly autonomous.

Dead in the Boot showcases Elbow's growth over the years in a more roundabout way than the typical greatest hits record by staying in the shadows.

Given that this album spans nearly a decade of the band's huge and peculiar journey, it's odd that its somnolent air actually renders it slightly one-note.

    In all, a comforting--but not extraordinary--collection of songs. [Oct/Nov 2012, p.128]
