Page Hamilton and Co. show more growth than they have in nearly two decades. And damn, they still have it when it comes to riffs. [Dec 2016, p.102]

It may not quite give you the sheer electric shock jolt of their classic Meantime and Betty albums, but Helmet are still capable of bloodying your nose from 100 paces.

A shorter running time means that Helmet has more time to play to their strengths while keeping a watchful eye on the things they’re curious about. For now, it’s a good balance, but surely Hamilton can’t be done screwing with the formula just yet.

Ultimately, though, after making such an indelible and unique contribution to the language of modern heavy rock, Hamilton continues to show that he's hemmed-in by the style he invented.

At no point during the album do Hamilton and crew feel like they're phoning it in, but the visceral moments are fleeting, and often tempered by melodic detours that fail to swing back around to assess the damage.

This isn’t horrible, but I can really only recommend Dead to the World to hardcore Helmet fans. The rest of you should just go listen to Meantime.
