Delta officially takes Mumford and Sons away from the refreshing, up-tempo, banjo-driven songs we’ve all come to know and love, with Guiding Light being pretty much the sole exception. The band claims this album is very close to themselves, which is probably the reason for it being more of an emotional journey through the lyrics than an album aimed to please the charts. This is bold and brave, but also takes away some of the Mumford and Sons magic.

Delta is the sound of a band presenting their Kid A without having made their OK Computer. Good but not great and one hell of a missed opportunity. For a band known for their no frills, band to the front live performances I fear this will all get lost in translation. Would you ever imagine M&S even considering using auto-tune? I didn't think so

Compared to recent efforts from the group, this album feel's refreshing. Unfortunately though this album could still get lost pretty easily in any FM adult contemporary station.

Delta provides Mumford & Sons a wide range of inventive expressions, allowing them to stay true to their essence: blending the rustic quality of their past with a more majestic approach that underscores the heavier themes of the record. [30 Nov 2018, p.49]

Delta reveals layers few would have thought they had. Often though, these moments of interest get flattened by a wave of arena-ready bombast. [Jan 2019, p.108]

An album in which he and his reformed jug-band compatriots paradoxically reach for a musical approach both more complex and more approachable, instead landing squarely in the realm of mediocrity.
