Die Lit is an anomaly, an album that works almost completely from its own lunatic script. At its best--which is to say almost the entire thing, really--the album almost seems to suspend gravity.

It remains first and foremost a very fun album.

Instead of sounding like a half-baked aberration or a tedious, overlong experiment, Die Lit broadcasts a refreshing and well-developed aesthetic--one that feels like Carti’s specific achievement. Its appeal feels distinctly corporeal, like it’s inducing some swag-rap equivalent of ASMR through exploring a limited and tightly EQd collection of sounds.

A lot of the gratification of this record is in the production, which takes the age-old hip-hop trick of taking a fractional melodic idea, barely a song by itself, and spinning out of it a thick sonic weave.

Through a more respectable body of work--is unlikely to win over any naysayers.

Thanks to the lack of coherence or variety though, nothing on Die Lit really sticks. It's fun enough but, save for a few keepers, has the lifespan of a mayfly. Rock to it for the summer and forget most of it by September.

Like Rae Sremmurd and Migos, these big-bass trap anthems owe much to their club-friendly vibe, but offer little in terms of substance or lasting impact.

Most people miss the appeal of this album; its easy to enjoy/digest, has tons of replayability while also being fun, exciting, and new. CartiMost people miss the appeal of this album; its easy to enjoy/digest, has tons of replayability while also being fun, exciting, and new. Carti could have easily put out an obnoxious trap album and racked in the sales, but instead, he chose to push the boundaries and foundations to which trap and cloud trap have been built upon. With edgy and catchy flows and clean-cut features; Carti takes inspiration from Young Thug and others while creating one of the most underrated albums of the last decade. Expand

The production, courtesy of Pi'erre and friends, is the albums strongest aspect. From the laid back wall of synths on the intro, to the industrial-trap vibes present on "R.I.P." and the beautifully looped strings and piano passages on "Shoota", almost every instrumental is sonically rich and rewarding. Playboi Carti, whose style might not appeal to everyone, proves to be an entertaining performer, often complimenting the beats with his youthful energy and melodic flows. Even with some filler tracks and unneeded features, "Die Lit" comes out as one of the best hip-hop projects of 2018, and an important standout in the trap genre.

Lame and bland, it would have done us all a favour if it didn't see the light of day.
